The Crawley family will return to screens for one last time later this year.
DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE recently released its first trailer, giving fans a glimpse into the story that takes place in the 1930s. The film is set to release Sept. 12, 2025.
DOWNTON ABBEY first began as a television show that ran from 2010- 2015, followed by two films: DOWNTON ABBEY and DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA.
The story follows the Crawley family and their servants who live in the United Kingdom in the early 1900s.
“It feels amazing. A tad emotional,” Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, said of the upcoming film. “It’s wonderful all to be back together again. You come back together, and it’s like no time has passed at all.”
The film is directed by Sion Curtis and written by Julian Fellowes, who both took part in the previous two films.
Fans are sad to say goodbye to the beloved characters.
“The time has come to say goodbye. #DowntonAbbey: The Grand Finale is only in theaters September 12,” DOWNTON ABBEY’s official Instagram announced earlier this year.
“This makes me glad and sad at the same time!” one fan said, referring to this being the last film in the franchise.
Another person added, “I’m already crying at the thought of it being the last film. But why not continue the series? DOWNTON ABBEY is truly engaging, wonderful, it keeps you glued to the screen.”
Movieguide®’s review of the latest installment, 2022’s DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA, reads, “The year is 1927. Violet Grantham, the family matriarch, plans to leave a French villa she owns to her granddaughter, Sybil, whose mother died during the series. Many characters from Downton travel to see it and make sure the inheritance is legit.”
The review continued: “It…contains some strong moral values such as remaining faithful in marriage and caring for family and friends. DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA contains almost no foul language. It does have some homosexual innuendos and references between two male characters.”
The new DOWNTON ABBEY movie will pay tribute to the late Maggie Smith, who played Violet Grantham throughout the series and subsequent movies. She died last September at the age of 89.
“We will never see the like of Dame Maggie Smith ever again,” said executive producer Gareth Neame. He hinted that there will be a “huge respect for her…will come across in in the next movie.”
Though THE GRAND FINALE will mark the end of the 15 year franchise, fans love for it will certainly continue.
