Kerry Washington knows the public has no business knowing about her family life.

The LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE star and mom of three takes her role very seriously, calling it a “real privilege,” in an interview with InStyle.

“Our kids get to be who they are, not who the world has decided they are,” she says.

She doesn’t intentionally share any images of her kids on her social media pages and keeps most of her family life private, Parents reported.

“It was very hard at the beginning,” Washington said. “I’d look at a picture of my kid and send it to my mother: ‘This picture has to be in the world, but I don’t want to post it!’ When [my kids] started going to school and I knew I couldn’t protect them every moment of the day, it was scary.”

“But it’s okay. My 11-year-old was with me at the Beyoncé concert this weekend… but I’m not posting images of her,” she said.

She was married for ten years before she shared a photo of herself with her husband publicly.

“We live our lives and we are in the public eye, but we are still fairly private… I feel like we are more protective of our real truth. That’s not for public consumption,” she said.

Washington and her husband recently made a rare appearance together at Milan Fashion Week.

“I’ve never seen her with her actual husband,” one shocked fan wrote after they saw the photos.

As an actress, producer, and director, her success transfers into all areas of her life.

“I want to be ambitious for things other than professional success,” she explains. “Ambitious for my kids, ambitious for my marriage, ambitious for life.”

“Part of what I love about being an actor is that it’s an extension of the social sciences. I try to approach a character through a lens of psychology and sociology and history and anthropology, because I think those things help me to really get under the skin of who a person is and the world that they come from that helps create who they are,” she expressed. “How are they raised? Who do they love? What are they afraid of?”

Washington’s commitment to protecting her family’s privacy reflects her deep sense of responsibility as a public figure and a parent. Hopefully, her kids will come to appreciate that she protected them like that.
