Fortnite Now Lets You to Sell Your Soul to the Devil
By Movieguide® Contributor
A new update to popular video game Fortnite now allows players to make deals with the devil and sell their souls to him in exchange for powerful perks.
The Fortnite map is always changing and evolving. This is one of the reasons the game is still so popular seven years after its release. The most recent update, however, poses a major problem as it allows players to interact with and make deals with the devil.
The most recent iteration of the game adds multiple new character NPCs including Mephisto — one of the chief demons in traditional German literature. The character is clearly meant to be the devil as he sports the classic devil look: red skin, horns, barbaric wear, and he sits atop an evil-looking throne. The new interaction added with Mephisto allows players to sacrifice points of health in exchange for rewards.
When interacting with Mephisto, players will be prompted with two dialogue options — one that allows them to sacrifice 20 health points in exchange for a powerful weapon while the other allows them to sacrifice all but one health point to revive any and all of their teammates.
While including a character like Mephisto may seem like a harmless, thematic addition, the message he represents poses major problems. In November 2023 alone, 1.6 billion hours of Fortnite were played, with the following December topping that number. When kids interact with media at that rate, it holds serious power over their imagination and worldview. Mephisto’s interactions in the game desensitize children to what it means to make a deal with the devil, especially when they receive powerful rewards in exchange for some health that can be easily healed.

The rise of occultism and witchcraft in America came about from its inclusion in media for decades. This allowed the general population to become comfortable with it and embrace it later on. The introduction of a deal with the devil serves as an extension of this dangerous trend and allows Satan a way into our children’s hearts and minds.
Parents should seriously consider not allowing their children to play Fortnite until the next update rolls around, removing Mephisto from the game.
