Veteran advocate and actor Gary Sinise revealed the most important thing he learned from his late son Mac while speaking on “The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe” podcast.

“Don’t take those precious moments for granted, you know, and we all do because we’re just living our lives and going through, and the next thing you know, you realize you can’t talk to somebody anymore,” Sinise told DIRTY JOBS host Mike Rowe.

Mac died on Jan. 5, 2024, after battling cancer.

Before his death, Mac and a friend, Oliver, produced Mac’s album Resurrection and Revival, and they had party to view the videos of the recording sessions.

That’s when Mac turned to his dad and said, “Let’s make 100 vinyls, Dad, and if we ever sell any, the proceeds can go to the [Sinise’s] foundation.”

Not long after, Mac went into the hospital for the final time.

“Things were getting harder, and then all of a sudden, I couldn’t talk to him because he wasn’t able he wasn’t able to talk anymore,” Sinise explained.

He continued: “You know, you realize, ‘Gosh, yesterday if I had only asked him this, you know, if I had only talked to him about that or asked him what he was thinking. Was he afraid? Was he scared?”

Following Mac’s death, Sinise penned a tribute to his son that celebrated his beautiful life.

“In sharing our story, we hope to shine a little bit of light on what has been a difficult time for us as Mac was truly a light for all of us. An incredible inspiration to those who knew and loved him, he faced his battle with grace, courage, and love. Even with one setback after another, he never stopped living and learning, creating, and giving, and loving,” Sinise wrote.

He continued: “He loved all our family. His wonderful sisters, Sophie and Ella and their children, and while I worked hard to manage the day-to-day medical care, his beautiful mother Moira was his constant companion. He loved her so. His grandmother, his aunts and uncles, his cousins, his brothers in law, his caregivers Lulu and Mimi. There are so many friends he loved and who loved him.”

He then shared Mac’s favorite quote from St. Augustine: “You have made us for yourself, oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

Late last year, Sinise release Part Two of Mac’s album.

“Very excited to have received the first copies of Resurrection & Revival: Part Two. This album is deeply personal to me as it is comprised of music written by my son, Mac,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a video of the records being made.

Though life is very different for Gary Sinise and his family without Mac, his influence and music continue to inspire them today.
