How Cultural Chaos will Spark Spiritual Revival, JESUS REVOLUTION Director Says

By Movieguide® Contributor

JESUS REVOLUTION director Jon Erwin believes that today’s societal chaos creates fertile grounds for a large spiritual awakening, comparable to the Jesus movement in the 1960s.

After studying the Jesus Movement for years before making his hit film, Erwin understands what cultural factors play into a large spiritual awakening.

The younger generation in the ‘60s and ‘70s realized they had spiritual needs that were not fulfilled by their “material quest” to get the car, house or life of their dreams.

“That was not enough, and they just recognized their own spiritual need…and they didn’t know what to do with it,” Erwin said. “And that led to this countercultural revolution…and much of this revolt of free love, drugs [and] rock and roll. That was all a spiritual quest.”

This lifestyle still left people spiritually hungry, despite putting everything into satisfying their spiritual needs. This emptiness caused many people to turn to Jesus, sparking the Jesus movement.

Erwin believes that the chaos in society today is because the younger generation is experiencing the same kind of spiritual crisis.

“A lot of the chaos we’re seeing today, we should celebrate a little bit because it’s a generation waking up to the fact that, ‘Something’s missing in my life, and I don’t know what’s missing, but I gotta go find out,’” he said. “That’s gonna lead to some chaos for a minute.”

Widespread spiritual awakening is already starting to spread across the country, from the revivals occurring on college campuses to JESUS REVOLUTION inspiring spontaneous baptisms.

JESUS REVOLUTION isn’t just enjoying box office success—it’s sparking revival and inspiring viewers to get baptized…

Since its release, Erwin has seen the real-world impact the movie is having on audiences.

“I’ve seen posts of people getting baptized in fountains outside the theater or in a lake the next day,” he shared. “Or a spontaneous praise and worship service starting in the theater, and then prayer happening in the theater long after the movie wrapped.”

The director even felt that impact during filming as well.

“We felt it on set when we were doing the baptisms,” Erwin explained. “I’ve never felt that kind of spiritual power on a day of filming ever in my life, and I think it bleeds through the screen. I think you feel it in the movie.”
