JESUS REVOLUTION Cast Talks New Faith-Based Movie: ‘God Can Change Things’

By Movieguide® Staff

JESUS REVOLUTION’s cast and crew recently shared what they hope younger generations take away from the new faith-based movie.

The movie stars Joel Courtney, Kelsey Grammer, and Jonathan Roumie, with Jon Erwin, Jon Gunn and pastor Greg Laurie.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads:

JESUS REVOLUTION is an accurate, compressed portrait of the hippies and Vietnam War protestors who find Jesus because God calls several Christians to tell them about Jesus Christ. The plot is propelled by a love story between an impoverished young man, Greg Laurie, with an alcoholic mother, and Cathe, a beautiful young woman from a wealthy Southern California family. Cathe becomes burned out by the drug scene. She brings Greg to Pastor Chuck Smith’s growing church in Newport Beach. Lonnie Frisbee, a young hippie preacher, has convinced Chuck to open his church to the young, disaffected people who’ve been drawn to Southern California.

JESUS REVOLUTION is incredibly well made and captivating. It has many scenes with jeopardy and inspiring, well-written presentations of Jesus Christ’s Gospel. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution because the movie accurately depicts the drug scene from an impartial viewpoint that might attract younger children. The movie also shows Greg Laurie’s mother’s constant drunkenness and philandering. The immoral behavior is part of the true stories in JESUS REVOLUTION, which, to an amazing degree, have been made into an exciting, cohesive, uplifting movie.

Roumie, star of the hit series THE CHOSEN, discussed his role as the hippie preacher Lonnie Frisbee.

“He was a man that was anointed by God and like many of the Apostles, he was a flawed human being,” he told Movieguide® from the red carpet. “If Jesus can use Judas Iscariot, we can use a guy like Lonnie Frisbee.”

“Lonnie frisbee didn’t sell Jesus out,” he added. “Lonnie Frisbee did his best to serve God and to promote God and he was a very wounded man and later in life some of those wounds caught up with him. But his heart was for Jesus from the beginning. Getting the opportunity to play somebody that has those flaws, it’s an interesting thing to play as an actor.”

Laurie, who is the head pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, said that he hopes younger generations can watch JESUS REVOLUTION and be inspired to look to Jesus for answers.

“I think it’s a story that shows God can change things,” he told Movieguide®. “We don’t get to determine what hand we’re dealt in life, but we determine how we will react to it. I believe Jesus Christ can break the cycle of sin in a person’s life.”

The movie also highlights Laurie’s relationship with his current wife, Cathe, who played a role in his conversion to Christianity.

Cathe said that JESUS REVOLUTION can act as a bridge to young people seeking answers about identity and life.

“We just pray that it brings hope to a younger generation,” Cathe said. “I think for us, we were going through so many similar things, searching for truth, searching for purpose and meaning,
something really worth living for. I believe that the answer is in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and I’m telling you it can turn your life around.”

“I’ve seen it work in my life and my sister’s life,” she added. “Young people, don’t waste your life searching in all the wrong places. God has the answer for you and this movie is showing people that there is hope that there is another way to live and a way to have direction and guidance.

In a world where everything is just sort of going every which way, we need to know that there is a right way to live and God has provided that for us.”
