Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned, leading to feelings of disappointment, but even then, God is still with us as Christian singer Matthew West reminded fans in a discussion with Kirk Cameron.
“When you’ve cried and you’ve cried until your tears run dry and you don’t know why, and you wonder if you can bow your head even one more time, do it one more time,” West said, reciting the lyrics to his song “Don’t Stop Praying.”
And if we’re all honest, sometimes we don’t feel like praying when life gets difficult. But West reminds us that in those moments, we cannot rely on our feelings to guide us.
“If you rely on your feelings, there’s going to be moments that come where your feelings tell you, ‘Prayer doesn’t work.’ Your feelings tell you, ‘What’s the point?’ Your feelings tell you that ‘There’s a ceiling up there, and that’s as far as your prayers are gonna go, and they’re gonna bounce back down,’” the singer described.
In moments like that, instead of relying on our feelings, we need to rely on faith.

“Faith extends beyond that feeling, turning into that act of obedience. And I’m going to continue to pray,” he said.
West continued, “When we make a choice that our faith is gonna extend beyond the way that we feel, and we’re going to dare to believe that what the Bible says is true. That in James, it says, ‘If we draw near to God, He will draw near to us.’”
He’s referring to is James 4:8, which says, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
West continued, “It doesn’t say He will immediately fix the thing. It just says that He’s going to be close to you. And what if our decision to pray is the decision to say, ‘You know what? God being close to me is enough. That’s what I need. And He’s going to carry me through whatever it is I’m going through in His own time. He will work all things for the good.'”
West’s sentiments echo Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
The Christian music mainstay frequently uses his platform to encourage others in their faith.
In an Instagram post about his tour stop in Duluth, Minnesota, West shared a few more lyrics to “Don’t Stop Praying.”
“Don’t stop believing because mountains move with just a little faith, and your father’s heard every single word you’re saying, don’t stop praying,” he sang.
“Thousands of voices lifted high, worshiping the One who never lets us down. Nights like this remind me why I do what I do. Thank you Duluth, MN, what a way to spend a summer night! 🙌” he wrote in the caption.
If you’re struggling right now and don’t know where to turn, seek God through prayer. Even if the outcome doesn’t change, He promises to be with us and comfort us.
