These Headphones Can Read Your Mind…Kind Of

New technology from the company Neurable allows scientists to track brain data in real-time from a person wearing a pair of headphones.
“[These headphones] have these sensors called electroencephalography or EEG, and what these sensors do is when your neurons fire in your brain, if the signal is large enough, it can actually be picked up externally around your ears,” Neruable CEO and co-Founder Ramses Alcaide told NBC News.
“Through proprietary brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, Neurable is pioneering the future of human-computer interaction by allowing you to use the power of your brain to get more out of your everyday devices,” the company promises on their website.
While this technology is currently only able to determine a user’s level of focus, this has already provided insight into life-changing disorders such as ADHD.
“When we dug deeper into the data that we had that wasn’t following a [normal] pattern, a lot of these individuals reported having ADHD, and you can see how much more variable the focus is,” Alcaide explained while showing a graph comparing normal brain focus with the focus of someone with ADHD.
Moving forward, the company believes its technology will also help doctors diagnose a variety of brain disorders without invasive or lengthy procedures.
“We might be able to take more proactive steps [rather] than reactive steps,” said Dr. John Morren, a neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic. “And as folks are living longer, I think that being able to make diagnoses before symptoms materialize is going to be revolutionary.”
In the near future, Alcaide believes this type of technology can be incorporated into everything we wear on our heads to provide individuals with valuable information. In the same way that smartwatches have revolutionized health and allowed individuals to gain access to key data for their fitness, Neurable’s technology could do the same for brain function.
“We’ve created an everyday wearable for tracking mental wellness and preventing burnout,” he said. “This is the ultimate wearable, and it tracks the most important organ in your body.”
“I see that anything that you wear on your head will become a normal part of your life,” Alcaide added. “The brain is the next frontier and how we use our technology to better understand ourselves.”
