Popular App TikTok Introduces Parental Control Options

Social media giant TikTok made the National Center on Sexual Exploitation’s (NCOSE) annual Dirty Dozen List this year. However, the popular app is aiming to get off the list with a new set of parental controls.

According to the Christian Post, the NCOSE said TikTok’s “lack of moderation and safety controls had created a space for sexual grooming by abusers and sex traffickers.”

The video platform that’s taken over the social media landscape has over 500 million users mostly consisting of children, teenagers and young adults.

So, TikTok introduced a new mode to parents in the U.S. and U.K. to help keep their children safe on the app.

They’re calling the new feature “Digital Wellbeing.”

TikTok released a statement regarding what features the Digital Wellbeing will give parents.

  • Screen Time Management: Control how long teens can spend on TikTok each day.

  • Direct Messages: Limit who can send messages to the connected account or turn off direct messaging completely.

  • Restricted Mode: Restrict the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences.

The statement continued saying,

“As part of our commitment to safety, the wellbeing of our users is incredibly important to us. We want people to have fun on TikTok, but it’s also important for our community to look after their wellbeing which means having a healthy relationship with online apps and services.”

“We will keep introducing ways to keep our community safe so they can stay focused on what matters to them – creating, sharing, and enjoying the creativity of TikTok’s community.”

NCOSE vice president of advocacy and outreach, Haley McNamara, told the Christian Post, “We are glad that TikTok is beginning to address the issues we have raised in a tangible way.”

McNamara praised the new features the app’s rolling out and said TikTok’s improvements are “vital.”

Movieguide® believes media wisdom and discernment are of the upmost important to children. Parents being able to control features on an app to keep them from being sexually exploited is a game changer, which hopefully many other apps will soon adopt if they haven’t already.
