Director Ron Howard thanks God for his wife Cheryl as they celebrate their “golden anniversary!”
“Grateful for 50 amazing years and the family and experiences it has yielded,” the Academy Award winner wrote in an Instagram post. “What an adventure down river through calm soothing waters and some tricky rapids as well. Our key….love and respect each other enough to just keep paddling. Thank God for you, Cheryl.”
The couple have been together since their high school days, where they met at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California.
“I met her, and there was never anybody else,” Howard told PEOPLE.
In a 2020 Instagram post, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first date with an Instagram post of himself wearing socks with Cheryl’s face on them.
“Nov 1 1970 Cheryl & I went on our 1st date,” Howard wrote. “We went to see a re-release of Stanley Kramer’s IT’S A MAD MAD MAD WORLD and then got some pizza at now defunct Barnone’s in Toluca Lake. Quite a start, right?”

He continued, “Today we are celebrating with these kind of socks we ordered (Cheryl’s w/my mug got held up) and a trip to our local take-out pizza place. We’ll be driving in the same ‘70 VW Bug I picked Cheryl up in 5 decades ago. It runs great. So do we.”
While the pair have been together for decades, daughter Bryce Dallas Howard revealed that it took a little while for her father to convince Cheryl to get married.
“While they had an incredible relationship in high school and everything, he proposed three times and she said no two of them,” Bryce said while appearing on THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW. “Because she was like, ‘I wanna go to school first. I’m not ready to be on your train yet.’ She’s really strong.”
Speaking about their long-lasting relationship, the ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW star said, “People say, ‘How’d you do it?’ There’s no technique. There’s no tactic other than communication is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways.”
“Beyond that, there’s an element of luck because people either grow together or they don’t and I don’t think you can force that,” he continued. “She’s unbelievably supportive and always has been. Our compatibility has endured through all kinds of experiences.”
Howard and Cheryl’s support for each other over the years has made their long-lasting marriage one of Hollywood’s greatest relationship success stories.
