Podcaster Tara-Leigh Cobble encourages Christians to “look for God,” instead of themselves, while reading the Bible.
“One of the greatest tips you had received and passed on to me was that you said, ‘Look for God in all the stories,’” Candace Cameron Bure told Cobble during an episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.” “Don’t look for yourself. Don’t try to find yourself in whatever book you’re reading. Find God.”
Cobble replied, “Isn’t it crazy how just the lens through which we read scripture and what we’re looking for [is] really a game-changer?”
She explained that it can be “burdensome” and “exhausting” to look for yourself while reading the Bible, adding, “It’s still all about me, and it’s not teaching me anything about God.”
“When you read the Bible and you look for God, you see that, despite the fact that we fall short, He’s made a way and He is completely committed to pursuing the people who fall short,” Cobble continued. “It paints Him as beautiful, and you feel so loved, and you feel so drawn in, and it’s a whole different story.”

In an episode of “Jesus Calling,” Cobble shared her own experiences with the struggle to look for God instead of herself while reading the Bible.
“I wanted God to tell me what I could do so that I could be a good Christian and earn His approval or figure out what promises I could use to back Him into a corner to get what I wanted from Him,” she said. “He’s not this transactional God, and that really frustrated me because I wanted the Bible to be about me.”
Cobble continued, So when my friend who’s [a] pastor challenged me to read through and look for God, that was a whole different lens…It just absolutely transformed not only the way I read Scripture, but the way I lived my life, the way I engaged in my relationship with God, the way I engaged with the world around me…everything was different.”
Cobble, who is behind the massively successful “Bible Recap” podcast, encourages others to study scripture with a focus on God, deepening their relationship with their faith.
“People want to read the Bible. There is a hunger and desire to know God,” she told Relevant Magazine. “That says less about us as a podcast and more about the hearts of people out there.”
She explained, “Every day we’re being shaped by things around us — social media, conversations, TV, even the voice in our head. And most of those things aren’t telling us the truth.”
“The truth is powerful, but it’s a lot easier to fight the lies when you have a storehouse of truth built up in your heart and mind,” Cobble continued.
Cobble’s comments are a reminder to put the focus on God while studying scripture.
