THE RETURN OF THE KING Returns to Theaters to Celebrate 20th Anniversary
By Movieguide® Contributor
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING will return to theaters in honor of its 20th anniversary.
The extended edition of the movie will hit the big screen again on April 13 and 19 in the US and on April 20 in Canada.
Screenings of THE RETURN OF THE KING will also include a video introduction from the franchise’s star, Elijah Wood, who played Frodo. He will discuss the impact of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work on people around the world, Deadline reports.
There will also be a segment with a new LORD OF THE RINGS tabletop game. Celebrities will play the game to raise money for the Extra Life For Kids fundraising program, in conjunction with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
After its first release in December 2003, the movie grossed over $1.1 billion and won 11 academy awards.
Movieguide®’s review of THE RETURN OF THE KING reads:
RETURN OF THE KING, the final chapter of LORD OF THE RINGS, tells what further trials Frodo, Sam, and their friends must face in order to defeat the demonic forces led by Sauron. RETURN OF THE KING is one of the great movie masterpieces that weaves many biblical principles and allegorical Christian metaphors into a magnificent story, but it is too scary and intense for younger children.
Movieguide® also previously reported on upcoming LORD OF THE RINGS projects:
Warner Bros. and New Line recently announced plans to revisit author J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle Earth with new LORD OF THE RINGS movies.
A new partnership with rights holders Embracer Group AB will let Warner Bros. make new feature-length movies based on Tolkein’s books.
The announcement came after CEO David Zaslev made it clear that Warner Bros. is a contender in the “franchise game,” noting that they also plan to reach out to author J.K. Rowling for future HARRY POTTER projects.
So far, Peter Jackson is the only director to have adapted Tolkein’s books into movies. Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, which was released from 2001-2003, combined for almost $3B at the box office.
