TobyMac: ‘We Have To Build On The Promises Of God’

Singer TobyMac is opening up about how the tragic death of his son inspired new song “Cornerstone.”
“This song was birthed at my firstborn’s funeral service. A broken man, I looked my family in the eyes and said, ‘We have to rebuild. Our hearts have been shattered into a thousand pieces,'” TobyMac — real name: Toby McKeehan — told People.
McKeehan’s son Truett died in 2019 at the age of 21 after an accidental drug overdose.
The singer explained the song’s inspiration further, saying, “We cannot build on the promises of this world. They will let us down every time. We have to build on the promises of God. We have to build our lives on the solid rock, the cornerstone.”
McKeehan continued, “We won’t build on prescription drugs. We won’t build on alcohol. We won’t build on being a victim. We will build on the rock. We will build on the cornerstone.”
“Cornerstone” has been inspiring listeners around the world. Aleteia reports that the single has gone No. 1 on both the Billboard and Mediabase charts.
McKeehan will be building on this success with a tour this fall, which will see him hitting the road alongside MercyMe and Zach Williams. The tour is organized by The Awakening Foundation.
“The Awakening team couldn’t be more thrilled to bring together the talents of TobyMac, MercyMe, and Zach Williams for this incredible tour,” Dan Fife, founder and President of Awakening Events, said of the tour “Each artist brings their own unique sound and style to the stage, and we can’t wait to see them unite to create an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans.”
