THE GRINCH (2018)

Quality:
****
Content:
+4 Biblical, usually Christian, worldview, with no questionable elements whatsoever.
THE GRINCH (2018) is a great movie about the true meaning of Christmas triumphing over alienation and materialism. It features powerfully loving parents and children, a joyous community of inspired Whos, and a terrific character arc for the Grinch, plus great Christmas carols and hymns focusing on Jesus Christ and His redemptive divinity, lordship and love.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS is a thoroughly delightful, brilliant, enthralling movie about how Charles Dickens crafted the beloved Christmas classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL and practically invented the way Christmas is celebrated today. THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS is an instant holiday classic, with a marvelous performance by Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens, who delightfully interacts with the characters from his story. It’s one of the best Christmas movies ever made, filled with good will toward men.

THE POLAR EXPRESS

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE POLAR EXPRESS is a fun-tastic holiday adventure for the whole family about a boy who travels on a magical train to the North Pole. THE POLAR EXPRESS lacks any references to Jesus Christ, the real reason for the Christmas season, but it is superbly done and contains positive moral lessons for children of all ages.

THE TREE THAT SAVED CHRISTMAS

Quality:
***
Content:
+3 Some minor questionable elements. (Media-wisdom is suggested to discuss.)
THE TREE THAT SAVED CHRISTMAS is an endearing TV drama about a girl who returns home to her family’s Christmas tree farm to save it from foreclosure, whereupon she must come to terms with a hurtful past, and find a way to preserve the future. THE TREE THAT SAVED CHRISTMAS keeps to a moral worldview, interjected with Christian faith elements, and the many plot twists maintain viewer interest right up to the very end.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1999)

Quality:
***
Content:
+3 Some minor questionable elements. (Media-wisdom is suggested to discuss.)

A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Patrick Stewart is faithful to the story and more Gospel-oriented than the other productions. Though some of the scenes become redundant and the Ghost of Chirstmas Past appears to be effeminate, Scrooge is reborn, and this production focuses on the real meaning of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS

Quality:
***
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as a married couple who have to suddenly prepare their annual Christmas party when their absent daughter decides to come home after all. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS is a surprisingly funny and warm Christmas movie that skews more toward Santa than Jesus but still contains a redemptive message.

DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS stars funnyman Jim Carrey as the nasty Grinch who finds out that he does have a heart after all. HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS is one of the most entertaining family fantasies to come along in quite a while, but it is very slightly spoiled by some infrequent scatological humor, slapstick violence and no direct mention of Jesus Christ, the real reason for the season.

ELF

Quality:
***
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
In ELF, a very tall elf must leave the North Pole and travel to earth to find his real parents, and, in the process, he creates quite a stir! This cute, funny Christmas comedy has, regrettably, no mention of the Christ of Christmas.

WHITE CHRISTMAS

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
The 1954 movie WHITE CHRISTMAS is a timeless classic Christmas musical which remains entertaining for all ages. This Oscar winner is set in green Vermont where a successful musical duo follows two sisters to a hotel in Vermont run by the duo’s beloved General from World War II. WHITE CHRISTMAS is enchanting and filled with beautiful dance numbers, fabulous photography and gorgeous singing from the whole cast.
