What You Need To Know:

ICE PRINCESS transforms a shy teenager with a politically correct mother into a lovely Cinderella. Casey Carlyle is a brainy bookworm who secretly dreams of becoming an Olympic ice skating champion, but pursues her mother’s goal of getting into Harvard. To land a scholarship, Casey does a science project on the physics of skating. Casey discovers that her book smarts help her to become a late-blooming skating prodigy. She goes behind her mother’s back, however, to take lessons from the tough mother of another skater, whom Casey also befriends. Casey is not prepared for the cutthroat competition at the ice rinks. Her situation is not improved when her disapproving mother finds out about Casey’s lies.

ICE PRINCESS is an entertaining, though sometimes unbelievable and corny, look at the world of competitive ice skating. Michelle Trachtenberg is absolutely adorable as Casey. Her energetic performance and the solid performance of the rest of the cast make up for the script’s shortcomings. Although the lying and feminism depicted in the movie are not fully rebuked, the story comes together to produce a triumphant fairy tale of discipline, sacrifice, honest competition, love, compassion, and overcoming adversity.

Content:

(BB, CapCap, Fe, PC, L, M) Strong moral viewpoint with positive capitalist content where teenager becomes an entrepreneur and sells her knowledge of physics to pursue her dreams, but mother’s feminism and political correctness are not fully rebuked, though her feminism is clearly wrong about the “sexism” of women’s ice skating; a few references to ice skaters’ butts and one light profanity; no violence, unless one counts falling down on the ice while skating; no sex but high school girls kiss guys two or three times; no nudity; teenagers have party where they drink out of cups but it is not clear whether they are drinking any alcohol; no smoking; and, cheating clearly rebuked and lying not rebuked strongly enough.

More Detail:

ICE PRINCESS transforms a shy geek with a politically correct feminist mother into a lovely Cinderella. In spite of some improbable plot devices, and even some repetitive acting, the movie comes together to produce a triumphant story of discipline, sacrifice, love, compassion, and overcoming adversity.

Casey Carlyle is a brainy bookworm who secretly dreams of becoming an Olympic ice skating champion, but pursues her feminist mother’s goals of helping Casey get into Harvard. To land a scholarship, Casey decides to do a science project on the physics of skating. Casey is surprised to find out that her book smarts have helped her to become a late-blooming skating prodigy.

In one way, our heroine, Casey Carlyle, discovers her motivational talent and pursues it with great passion. In another way, the movie helps people who have thought only for themselves start to consider the needs of others. In fact, the movie says quite plainly, love is thinking of others, a paraphrase of Romans 13:10.

Although the mother’s feminism is not completely rebuked, the mother is clearly wrong about her disdain for ice skating. She comes to recognize her daughter’s talent and accept her desire to fulfill her dream. Casey’s deceit also may not be strongly rebuked enough. On the good side, however, Casey pays for her ice skating pursuits by becoming an entrepreneur and selling her knowledge of physics to help the other girl skaters. Thus, Casey does not have to cheat in order to compete with them and uses capitalism and intelligence to succeed. That’s a wonderful message to send today’s children and teenagers.
