SCARY MOVIE

What You Need To Know:

Television’s former IN LIVING COLOR teammates Jim Carrey and the Wayans brothers seem to be competing this summer for the foulest movie they can make. Regrettably, this is at the cost of the morality of children. In SCARY MOVIE, the Wayans brothers’ push what little envelope is left, while boasting that they are heading for “the next extreme.”

Lacking in style and embracing the vile, SCARY MOVIE begins with a scene taken almost frame by frame from SCREAM. Carmen Electra plays Drew, a girl staying at home by herself, making popcorn before she watches a scary movie. She gets the inevitable phone call, and, from there, everything from sexual functions to the “girl-in-distress” situation in recent horror movies, especially the SCREAM trilogy, is spoofed. Littered with full male nudity, strong violence, foul language, underage drunkenness, drug abuse, and numerous foul sexual depictions, SCARY MOVIE pushes the limit on its R-rating. With former co-star Jim Carrey’s atrocious ME, MYSELF & IRENE released just a few weeks earlier, the Wayan’s brothers are accelerating the ugly turn that Hollywood is taking in comedy. This may mean that movies in this genre probably will be anemic for quite a while

More Detail:

Television’s former IN LIVING COLOR teammates Jim Carrey and the Wayans brothers seem to be competing against each other this summer for the foulest movie they can make. Regrettably, this gross-out contest is at the cost of the morality of children, teenagers and adults. In SCARY MOVIE, the Wayans brothers push what little envelope is left, while boasting that they are heading for “the next extreme.”

The movie begins with a scene taken almost frame by frame from SCREAM. Carmen Electra plays Drew, a girl staying at home by herself, making popcorn before she watches a scary movie. She gets the inevitable phone call, and, from there, everything from sexual functions to the “girl-in-distress” situation in recent horror movies is spoofed, but most of the jokes are based on the SCREAM trilogy.

The story continues with the character in the SCREAM mask killing off Drew and, to no one’s surprise, going after a group of friends at her school. The movie then takes on many scenes from other movies, and even television ads, spoofing I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, AMISTAD, THE MATRIX, and the Budweiser “Waz up” ads. Some of these spoofs are indeed funny, and although there are also some clever lines in this movie, they are few in number and all overshadowed by the massive amounts of foul, obscene and pornographic jokes strewn throughout the movie.

The basic idea behind SCARY MOVIE seems like a funny one. The movie has been helped by only slightly off-color trailers and TV ads, which have brought a chuckle to many people. Consequently, this movie has become a powerful draw, especially for teenagers. The actual movie itself, however, resembles nothing like other material from Wayans, including I’M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA, a funny, lighthearted spoof of Rambo-type action movies. Regrettably, the trailers and ads don’t even come close to depicting how far SCARY MOVIE goes. In fact, most of the funny parts of the movie are in the trailers and TV ads, where many Hollywood movies have always put some of their best scenes and lines to draw people into the theater. Ironically, the parts of the movie that are “tame enough” to be on TV are the cream of the crop, which means that all of the foul content in the actual movie is completely unnecessary.

Littered with full male nudity, strong violence, foul language, underage drunkenness, drug abuse, and numerous lewd sexual depictions, SCARY MOVIE pushes the limit on its R-rating. Last year, MPAA chief Jack Valenti admitted in USA TODAY that SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT should have been rated NC-17. “We probably made a mistake with SOUTH PARK,” Valenti said. If SCARY MOVIE is the next extreme, then the MPAA apparently has not changed at all, and Valenti’s comment about the SOUTH PARK movie was a lie.

With former co-star Carrey’s atrocious ME, MYSELF & IRENE released just a few weeks earlier, the Wayans brothers are accelerating the crude turn that Hollywood is taking toward comedy these days. SCARY MOVIE’s tremendous success at the box office may mean that the quality of movies in this genre probably will be anemic for quite some time: lacking in style and embracing the vile.
