THE COLLECTOR

"More Depressing ‘Torture Porn’"

What You Need To Know:

THE COLLECTOR, a horror movie, focuses on a construction worker, Arkin, who is helping a jewelry broker finish remodeling his family’s isolated home before they go on vacation. Arkin comes back that night, however, to steal the expensive diamond the man has locked in his safe. He finds out that a masked man, who has set up a bunch of deadly, gruesome traps in the house, is torturing the husband and wife in the basement. Their little girl is hiding somewhere in the house. And, their teenage girl went out on a date. Can Arkin survive the killer’s vicious traps and rescue all the family members?

THE COLLECTOR is another in a series of what have been called “torture porn” movies. Like most of the others, the movie teases viewers with the idea that there will be one hero who gets away from a vicious serial killer intent on brutally torturing his victims. True to form, THE COLLECTOR ends in a depressing last scene where the wounded killer re-captures the hero and gets clean away. It is torture sitting through this movie’s gratuitous gore, and the ending is depressing and infuriating.

Content:

(HHH, B, LLL, VVV, SS, NN, A, D, MM) Very strong nihilistic humanist worldview about a vicious serial killer who ultimately is too smart and strong for police and everyone else, with a thief as the hero who, admirably, tries to save a family of four from being the killer’s next victims; 26 obscenities (including some “f” words), two strong profanities and four light profanities; very strong graphic and bloody violence includes cat chopped in half, man pulls hand from razor blades, man pulls hands off fishing hooks, man falls into bear traps, man electrocuted, killer grabs woman’s tongue with pliers then sews her mouth shut, one man has been tortured in a bloody way and hangs upside down with wounds bleeding, nails have been driven through man’s feet, teenager’s body slammed against wall with spikes, little girl threatened, man impaled by falling knives, spike on phone receiver stabs man in ear, dog attacks people, etc.; two visits to strip joint with half-naked women dancing and teenagers kiss and begin to make love; shots of upper female nudity in nightclub and older teenage girl’s top and bra are ripped off; alcohol use; smoking; and, kidnapping, breaking and entering, stealing, killer is more concerned about the safety of bugs than he is about humans, and woman owes loan shark money and is angry when estranged husband has trouble getting money for her.
