THE LIST

"A Christian Mystery Thriller"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

THE LIST is an entertaining thriller about a sinister secret society started by some wealthy southerners during the Civil War. Primarily set in contemporary South Carolina, the movie deals with a young lawyer named Renny Jacobson (played by Chuck Carrington) becoming a member of the society only to learn about its dark side and feel compelled to combat it. Malcolm McDowell stars as the head of the evil group. While the movie will be cheered by Christian audiences for its demonstration of the power of prayer, it should be entertaining to secular audiences simply as an engaging mystery.

The movie pits good against evil, prayers against curses, and belief in God versus the occult and against secret financial powers. It is rare to see a movie where prayer is taken seriously in the battle between good and evil. The movie contains a salvation experience and clear reliance on God to achieve victory. MOVIEGUIDE® heartily commends THE LIST and encourages Christians to enjoy the movie. It is slow in parts and, like many mysteries, can be confusing until all the pieces come together. For a low-budget movie, it is very well made.

Content:

(C, BBB, O, A, M) Light, somewhat ambiguous Christian worldview with very strong moral elements showing the power of prayer in combating evil and the occult is portrayed as evil to be combated by believers; no obscenities or profanities; spiritual violence (curses) result in physical injury and sometimes death but action is not violent in the physical combat sense; some social drinking, but no obvious drunkenness; no smoking; and, attempted robbery, secret society with blood oaths and considerable intrigue.

More Detail:

THE LIST is an entertaining thriller about a sinister secret society started by some wealthy southerners during the Civil War. While the movie will be cheered by Christian audiences for its demonstration of the power of prayer, it should be entertaining to secular audiences simply as an engaging mystery.

The movie opens with a man praying in a church, then going to turn down an offer to be part of a blood covenant agreement between the heads of several southern families to see that a sizable fortune in gold would be used to provide for generations of these families in the future.

Jump forward to present day South Carolina. A young lawyer named Renny Jacobsen (Chuck Carrington) is informed his father has died and at the last minute cut him out of his $22 million estate except for a mysterious invitation to join a secret group called “The List.”

On his way to a meeting with the members of “the list,” he meets Jo Johnston (Hilarie Burton) who is headed to the same meeting. The members of “the list” vote not to allow Jo, a female, to join the secret society, but Renny is initiated with a signature and a bloodstained thumbprint. Renny joins thinking membership will result in certain wealth. Desmond Larochette (Malcolm McDowell), the head of “the list,” gives Renny a new Corvette and an envelope full of $100 bills as “gas money.”

Renny finds himself attracted to Jo. Together, they begin to piece together their family histories. The sinister nature of “the list” becomes more and more apparent. Renny and Jo find themselves in danger as they discover the impact of curses, past and present. Fortunately, they also learn about the prayers of Renny’s mother and others.

This movie pits good against evil, prayers against curses, and belief in God versus the occult and against financial powers of a secret society. It is rare to see a movie where prayer is taken so seriously as a vital activity in the battle between good and evil. While the movie may not be as inspiring as FACING THE GIANTS, it does contain a salvation experience and a reliance on God to achieve victory.

MOVIEGUIDE® heartily commends THE LIST and encourages Christians to support and enjoy the movie. It is a little slow in parts and like many mysteries can be confusing until all the pieces come together. For a low-budget movie, however, it is very well made. It is great to see Malcolm McDowell, the star of Stanley Kubrick’s CLOCKWORK ORANGE, in a movie that demonstrates the power of prayer. At the screening we attended, some of those who made the movie spoke about how prayer played a vital role in the making of the movie, including the signing of Malcolm McDowell.
