A small island near northwest Ireland holds the mysterious secrets of a family’s ancestors who once lived among herds of seals in THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH. Liam Coneelly fell in love with a beautiful “selkie,” a creature half-human and half-seal, named Nula. Nula shed her seal coat, married Liam and gave birth to several children before returning to the sea forever. After Liam’s death, his young daughter Fiona goes to live with her grandparents. Amid tales of her brother Jamie’s mysterious disappearance as an infant and determined to penetrate the secrets of her family’s mysterious past, Fiona secretly visits the island of Roan Inish, where Fiona actually sees her brother, Jamie, running naked down the beach and frantically calls out to him. Fiona and her grandparents move to the island to search for Jamie.
Writer-director John Sayles bases this heartfelt, yet haunting, folk tale on Rosalie K. Fry’s novella SECRET OF THE RON MOR SKERRY. THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH honors the art of storytelling, a rarity in a movie world of show-off technical fireworks. The premise of THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH, as stated by grandfather Hugh, is: “The sea has the power to give and to take away.” This un-biblical premise is accentuated by an occultic worldview, portraying animals with disturbing, magical powers and the ability to transform into humans and mate with human beings.
