SPRING BREAKERS

What You Need To Know:

SPRING BREAKERS is one of the most morally debauched movies ever to hit theatres. It follows four airheaded college girls as they go on spring break for sex and alcohol. One of them is a Christian girl who maintains her purity throughout the movie, but even she gets caught up in drinking and trying marijuana. The four girls can’t afford the trip, so the three non-Christians rob a restaurant and its patrons using squirt guns and a giant hammer to scare people into giving them money. When the cops finally catch up to them, a vile criminal nicknamed Alien bails them out and tries to seduce them. He also wants them to help him in his criminal endeavors.

SPRING BREAKERS is transfixing to watch because of its cinematography and dance musical score. Otherwise, however, it’s a morally repellent movie, with extremely lurid, violent, criminal content. Some say the filmmakers are making a subversive morality play, as two of the girls face dire consequences. However, the movie ends with two girls getting away with everything, including multiple murders. SPRING BREAKERS is abhorrent.

More Detail:

SPRING BREAKERS is one of the most morally debauched movies ever to hit mainstream theatres. It has a strong pagan worldview that’s surprisingly undercut by one Christian character’s positive decision making, but the rest of the movie’s filled with extremely lurid, violent content.

The movie, directed and co-written by avant-garde filmmaker Harmony Korine (of the infamous KIDS), follows four airheaded college girls as they decide to go to spring break for sex and alcohol. One of them is a Christian girl who maintains her purity throughout the movie, but even she gets caught up in drinking and trying marijuana while on the trip. The four girls can’t afford the break trip on their own, so the three non-Christians decide to rob a restaurant and its patrons using squirt guns and a giant hammer to scare people into giving up their money.

When they get away with their crime, they now have enough money to go to spring break and do it in style. When the police track them down and throw them in jail for their robbery, a local thug (James Franco) bails them out. He then tries to seduce them all into sexual affairs and into following his orders on criminal matters. The catch: he’s hoping to seduce them into being his de facto sex slave, as well as criminal activities such as more robberies.

The one girl who’s Christian goes home early, refusing his offer, while another one gets injured and leaves. The remaining two healthy girls, however, start learning how to shoot and agree to share the thug in threesomes. The final showdown is between Franco’s criminals and his childhood best friend, an opposing drug lord and gang runner now. This results in a chaotic shootout where the remaining two girls survive but face no consequences.

SPRING BREAKERS is transfixing to watch because its cinematography and dance music scores are unmistakably unique. Yet, it’s also a morally repellent movie, with characters doing whatever, whenever, and whomever they want. Some say filmmaker Harmony Korine is actually making a subversive morality play, as two girls face dire consequences, but the movie ends with two girls getting away with everything, including multiple murders.

SPRING BREAKERS has a minimum of coherent dialogue, and not much story either. It’s beautifully shot. As the evil thug lures the girls into more and more evil, James Franco delivers a portrait of pure evil at its seductive worst. Some critics are saying that SPRING BREAKRS is a satire of spring break excess, but for nearly every moment it’s onscreen, it’s not worthy viewing for anyone.
