What You Need To Know:
This is an engaging first episode but continues to follow the tone of the first season and contains gory, bloody violence and foul language. With seven episodes in Season 2, there is a chance for the show’s more redeeming qualities to take center stage, but based on the first episode MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for all audiences.

More Detail:
Season 2 of the highly popular Netflix thriller SQUID GAME picks up where Season 1 left off. The first episode opens with a recap of the prior season, revisiting Seong Gi-hun, the reluctant winner of the brutal games. Defying a command from a mysterious phone call, Gi-hun vanishes into hiding.
A year after his victory, he assembles a team to track down the enigmatic “recruiter” who initially invited him to the deadly competition. Despite his newfound wealth, Gi-hun remains haunted by his experiences and driven by vengeance—his sole objective: to find and kill the recruiter.
Meanwhile, viewers learn that a fellow member of the previous games, Hwang Jun-ho, survived his run-in with the man behind the games after being shot and falling into the water. Although his memory is fuzzy, the cop uses his connections to try and find the island where the games took place.
Soon, the people employed to help the vengeful Gi-hun discover that the recruiter is more formidable than they had previously thought. After a traffic stop, Jun-ho realizes that he knows the man from the games and begins a search for him.
SQUID GAME Season 2 Episode 1 picks up right where Season 1 left off. The mystery of who is truly behind the awful games continues to plague Gi-hun and the audience. The episode also carries over the overall tone of the first season, with some graphic violence and elaborate, intense, and thrilling games characters must play at risk of losing their lives.
The production quality remains among the best-looking and well-acted Netflix series on the streaming platform. However, its engaging story and quality production are marred by unnecessary foul language and bloody kills. In perhaps the episode’s most graphic scene, Gi-hun hallucinates that a man with a mask has come to his door with the severed heads of people he befriended during the games.
The episode also fleshes out more of the sadistic nature of the man who recruits down-on-their-luck people to die in the game, leading to some thrilling but violent scenes. While it is unfair to paint the entirety of Season 2 with one brush, it’s safe to say that — like the first season — the series will become more violent and intense as it progresses.
At its best, SQUID GAME shows the depravity of sinful humans motivated by greed, power, money and other vices. While a select few of the characters exemplify moral attributes such as bravery, honesty, and the pursuit of justice, SQUID GAME has failed to flesh out a convincing, overall worldview that would make MOVIEGUIDE® recommend the series. At its worst, SQUID GAME seems to glorify the violence it wants its characters to condemn.
Ultimately, while SQUID GAME remains an engaging and thrilling watch, it is far from family-friendly. Parents should exercise caution, as the show’s mature themes, graphic violence, and unsettling imagery make it unsuitable for children and teenagers. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for all audiences.
