More Detail:
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is a movie short on Apple TV+ about a stuffed rabbit who helps bring a shy, lonely boy out of his shell. Accompanied by the excellent storytelling of the original book by Margery Williams, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is sheer artistic genius and shows that sacrificial love is the key that unlocks the door to the magic of self-discovery, purpose and life.
William is a shy boy who doesn’t understand that he’s lovable. The situation escalates when he has to move away with his family. He bids farewell to his classmates and heads out to a whole new world.
Though the environment and other children are friendly, William is unable to connect with any-one. His loving and kind parents surprise him with a stuffed rabbit at Christmastime. William is delighted with his new friend, Rabbit. The two are inseparable, which becomes concerning to William’s parents who want him to make real friends. Meanwhile, most of the other toys reject Rabbit because he doesn’t have moving parts, and so they believe he isn’t real.
William and Rabbit go on fantastical adventures searching for lost treasure. On one such adven-ture, William falls deathly ill and leaves Rabbit behind. The dejected Rabbit encounters rabbits in the wild. After a short interrogation, they conclude he’s not real. However, Wise Horse tells Rab-bit that being unconditionally loved makes you real.
The other toys warn Rabbit that he should hide, so that he is not chosen to be with William this night. Because he is very sick, any toy who touches him will be burned in order to avoid the
spread of disease. Rabbit insists on being with his best friend, even though he may die. The toys try to dissuade him by trying to convince him that William doesn’t love him. With a tear in his eye, Rabbit agrees it may be true, but he loves William. He is content to be with his sick friend, even to the end.
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is the kind of story that makes people feel like everything is right in the world. It captures the ideal of a children’s bedtime story, something we never outgrow. The classic warmth and cleverly inserted animation sequences make this a masterpiece for everyone.
