What You Need To Know:
(NA, LLL, VVV, S, NN, A/D, M) Pagan; 70 obscenities & 11 profanities; several fist fights (some between women) & 70+ graphically violent deaths including, but not limited to: gunshots, broken necks, explosions (both gasoline and hydrogen warhead), impalements (one through the eye), falling, & stabbings; several scenes of offensive language regarding fornication & intended adultery interrupted; lewd dance done in lingerie in hotel room by a woman in front of a man she thinks is not her husband; alcohol use; and, destruction of property, theft, cruelty to animals, & theme of the end justifies the means.
Excessive, smarmy, derivative…these are some of the terms that apply to the R-rated movie TRUE LIES. From a clunky opening title to the clumsy “James Bond” tango to the “O.J. Simpson” jealousy sequence to the multiple, excessive endings, this movie has everything except a cohesive plot, appropriate casting, competent acting, talented editing, and intelligent direction. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Harry Tasker, a special agent for a top-secret government agency. Supposedly, Harry is multilingual, cool-headed and irresistible to women. For fifteen years, he has kept his real profession from his wife, Helen, a frumpy legal secretary. Wishing for a more exciting life, Helen flirts with a man she thinks is a secret agent. So while saving the country from terrorists, Harry must also save his marriage.
TRUE LIES is truly terrible. James Cameron has written himself an unintelligible script and gone on to direct it badly. There are time lapse offenses, going from night to broad daylight with no transition, and there are multiple endings, each of which tiresome. With over 70+ grizzly deaths, horrible language, a reckless disregard for human life, and a portrait of a father who not only chronically lies to his family, but makes his wife debase herself in front of a stranger, TRUE LIES is a movie that does not deserve America’s hard-earned dollar.
