More Detail:
WE’RE SCROOGED is a well-made romance with engaging characters and a nice Dickensian twist. The leading gentleman and lady are convincing and relatable. The character of Nick, who functions as a much happier Jacob Marley, is an actually meaningful depiction of St. Nicholas. The movie has good writing, lines such as “What the Dickens” peppering the dialogue with an allusive yet very present day zest. The music and cinematography are also quite indicative and well chosen. While nothing can top Dicken’s classic, the movie thinks of freshly creative ways to nuance the story. For example, it brings the three ghosts into the modern world in clever and surprising ways.
The main worldview in WE’RE SCROOGED is Romantic, with some strong moral, redemptive elements promoting values such as true friendship, forgiveness and redemption. These positive values are mostly derived from the famous Dickens novella the movie is based upon. However, WE’RE SCROOGED has no clear connections to Christ or Christmas. On this front, the movie stays in the realm of vague platitudes like “the Christmas spirit,” etc. Nonetheless, WE’RE SCROOGED is a fun and largely family-friendly affair with no foul language, violence or other overt negative content. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children due to light Romantic elements.
