A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS

"No Room for a Renegade"

What You Need To Know:

A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS depicts two boys whose friendship is tested when a man who befriends them interrupts their lives. One boy takes a liking to him, while the other wants nothing to do with him after being threatened by him. After they both see the man’s true colors of violent behavior, selfishness and hate, the boys learn that their friendship is precious and grow closer together.

Though ROMEO BRASS is fairly light-hearted and humorous at times, this comedy takes a dark turn in its intensity, although the movie ended up being a moral lesson in friendship and family. Though aesthetically the picture is inept, it is a realistic look at boyhood friendship and its ability to survive family predicaments, negative influences and mistakes. However, this movie was marred by many questionable elements that diminish the movie. There were some scenes that could have easily been made more graphic, but were not. There was even some restoration of estranged relationships made to form stronger bonds within the family. Yet, because of the large amount of foul language used within the script along with other questionable elements, MOVIEGUIDE® recommends extreme caution

More Detail:

Living next door to each other, Romeo and Gavin are the best of friends, until that friendship is tested by a man who befriends them.

Romeo is a hefty boy who can easily take care of himself. Gavin is a boy with a bad back but a sly wit about him. Together, they are a good balance and help each other through trials, especially when it comes to their respective families. One afternoon, some older boys begin teasing and pushing Gavin. Romeo sees what is happening, and immediately confronts the boys, who then threaten him. Soon a fistfight breaks out until a young man named Morell comes over and pulls the boys off Romeo. He offers Romeo and Gavin a ride home and not long after the trio begins to hang out often.

Soon, Morell notices Romeo’s older sister, Ladine, and asks Romeo and Gavin if they think he has a chance with her. They oblige, but Romeo informs him that his militia-type style will never do. Gavin, wanting to play a joke, insists that an outrageous sports outfit is the way to go. Morell purchases one and wears it into the clothing store where Ladine works. Ladine becomes aggravated at Morell’s insistence and informs him that she does not like his style of dress. Though a bit upset himself, an undaunted Morell asks Ladine to have dinner with him, and she accepts.

Morell takes the boys out on a school day, and Romeo offers to get everyone ice cream. While he is gone, the usually jovial, silly Morell pulls a small knife on Gavin, and begins to threaten him and his family. When a frightened Gavin asks him what he’s doing, Morell chastens him for making him out to be a fool in front of Ladine. When Romeo returns with the ice cream, he notices Gavin crying. Morell tells him nothing is wrong, and Romeo merely shrugs it off. From that point, Gavin’s refusal to hang out with Morell leads Romeo to believe that Gavin is being snobbish. Morell only encourages this. Romeo has troubles of his own, since his delinquent father has shown up again. This only angers Romeo, which Morell also encourages.

As Romeo and Morell grow closer, Gavin feels left out. He undergoes surgery for his back, and Romeo never stops by to see him. He and Romeo stop speaking to each other, and Gavin busies himself with school and learning magic tricks. Morell and Romeo hang out together more than ever, and Morell tries to persuade Romeo to talk with Ladine about going out on another date with him. She does agree, citing that she “feels sorry for him.” While over at his place, he enters the room where she is sitting wearing nothing but a robe. He then insists on her touching him, and she starts to leave. He tries to stop her at first, but she quickly departs the situation. From there, Morell’s true colors are shown, Romeo’s dad redeems himself, and Romeo realizes that he has sacrificed his true friend for a horrible mistake.

A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS is a realistic look at boyhood friendship and its ability to survive family predicaments, negative influences and mistakes. The story, though very dark in its thematical elements, ended up being a moral lesson in friendship and family. Though aesthetically the picture is weak, it makes up for this deficiency in its realistic depictions.

However, this movie was marred by many questionable elements. There were some scenes that could have easily been made more graphic, but were not. Yet, because of the large amount of foul language used within the script along with other questionable elements, MOVIEGUIDE® recommends extreme caution.
