What You Need To Know:

WORLD WAR Z stars Brad Pitt as family man Gerry Lane, a retired United Nations epidemics expert. Lane’s forced back to work when a mysterious virus causes a rapid, worldwide epidemic of people turning into rampaging, mindless zombies. To help stop the pandemic, Lane leaves his wife and two young daughters behind on a US Navy warship to keep them safe from attack. Meanwhile, he jets across the globe to attack epicenters in South Korea, Israel and finally Scotland. All the time, he fights off hordes of the undead creatures.

WORLD WAR Z is an exciting, entertaining, yet occasionally terrifying, depiction of a solid family man leading the quest to defeat a worldwide zombie rampage. Some of the zombie effects are gruesome or scary, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution. The movie’s also packed with massive attacks by zombie hordes, with humans having to shoot them dead. Otherwise, however, WORLD WAR Z maintains a distinctive human element throughout. It keeps its story engaging on an emotional level. Mature viewers will want to root for the family man hero in WORLD WAR Z.

Content:

(BBB, C, P, E, LL, VVV, A, M) Very strong moral, heroic worldview that’s pro-family, with people helping others, Jews save Arabs in Jerusalem as zombies attack the city, and a redemptive element of sacrifice, plus American military is viewed positively, but a brief prologue suggests an environmentalist reason for the worldwide zombie outbreak; seven obscenities and five light profanities; very strong and strong action, zombie, sci-fi violence but blood and gore is muted, including zombies rampaging and hordes of zombies climb on top of one another to get humans, mass destruction of vehicles during car chases, very frequent depictions of zombies getting shot such as shots to the head that are implied just offscreen or from a distance, terrifying zombie makeup effects, a hand grenade is opened aboard a plane filled with zombies, grenade blows a hole in the plane and makes dozens of people and zombies get sucked out to their doom, zombies climb all over each other by the thousands, like ants, to climb over a giant wall protecting Jerusalem, and young children are shown in peril in numerous scenes; no sex; no nudity; one scene of the hero drinking a beer to calm down; no smoking or drugs; and, some looting shown.

More Detail:

WORLD WAR Z is an exciting, entertaining, yet occasionally terrifying, depiction of a solid family man leading the quest to defeat a worldwide rampage of zombies. It has a moral worldview with some PC depictions of global warming and other environmental issues in the opening credits that are thankfully, if inexplicably, unmentioned in the rest of the movie.

The story follows family man Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a retired United Nations (UN) epidemics expert who is forced back to work when a mysterious virus causes a rapid, worldwide epidemic of people turning into zombies, and then attacking and infecting others indiscriminately. To help stop the epidemic, Lane has to leave his wife and two young daughters behind on a US Navy warship to keep them safe from attack. Meanwhile, he jets across the globe to attack epicenters in South Korea, Israel and finally Scotland. All the time, he is chased by and has to fight off hordes of the undead creatures.

Some of the zombie effects in WORLD WAR Z are gruesome or scary. The movie’s also packed with massive attacks by zombie hordes, with humans having to shoot them dead. Otherwise, however, WORLD WAR Z maintains a distinctive human element throughout. It keeps its story engaging on an emotional level as well. For example, it establishes Gerry Lane as a family man from the start. This gives viewers a real reason to root strongly for him and to worry about his and his loved ones’ fates.

Cinematically speaking, although the astonishing special effects are no doubt CGI, they maintain a realistic grittiness that keeps the zombies realistic throughout, no matter how big their hordes are. The key here is likely director Marc Forster, who directed emotionally driven indie movies like MONSTERS BALL and THE KITE RUNNER before becoming an action director with the James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE. As a result, he manages to unite both kinds of movies together in this one.

In addition, the movie’s four writers are all experts of science-fiction including the TV series LOST, the movie CLOVERFIELD, and TV’s BABYLON 5. They wring out maximum terror while avoiding overly graphic blood and guts violence, keeping the language almost completely clean, and leaving out any pointless sex or nudity. They also add in plenty of dark wit that results in some good laughs to relieve all the scary tension. Overall, WORLD WAR Z is JURASSIC PARK for mature audiences.
