5 Lessons Hollywood Can Learn from C.S. Lewis By Ben Kayser, Managing Editor The influence C.S. Lewis has had on Christianity, culture, art, and literature can fill, and has filled many pages in many books. Whether your first introduction to his work was THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, MERE CHRISTIANITY, or THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, undoubtedly most everyone has a connection with one of his writings. With Nov. 29 being C.S. Lewis’s birthday, it’d be appropriate therefore to visit some of the words that C.S. Lewis wrote long ago, but that are just as applicable today. Here are five lessons from C.S. Lewis that Hollywood (and everyone) should remember and five movies exhibiting these qualities. 1. The best movies are those that can be enjoyed by the whole family. “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” – C.S. Lewis, various sources The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2. The Good, the True, and the Beautiful never get old. “Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.” – C.S. Lewis, MERE CHRISTIANITY
3. Give and serve, even when there are no cameras around. “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” – C.S. Lewis, MERE CHRISTIANITY
4. Humility is more becoming than pride. “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” – C.S. Lewis, MERE CHRISTIANITY
5. There’s more to life than material possessions. “Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth ‘thrown in’: aim at Earth and you will get neither.” – C.S. Lewis, THE JOYFUL CHRISTIAN
