"Curiosity Can Be Dangerous"

What You Need To Know:

ANNABELLE COMES HOME follows the story of the demonic doll that haunts families. Lorraine and Ed Warren, two Catholic exorcists, are bringing back Annabelle, a doll that’s been possessed by demons in the past. They put Annabelle in the basement of their house, place her in a cell with a lock and key, and bless the space. The Warrens leave their house for a weekend of work, leaving their daughter, Judy, with her babysitter, Mary Ellen, and Mary Ellen’s friend, Daniela. However, Daniela sneaks into the basement and unlocks the cell containing Annabelle. Demonic chaos ensues.

ANNABELLE COMES HOME is a classic horror movie, with jump scares and classic characters. The movie has a strong Christian, moral worldview where good conquers evil, but it’s not as scary as the previous movies in the CONJURING series. Some scenes and scary characters are more humorous than scary. However, the movie extols Jesus, prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit in the everyday. Though this is the case, the movie’s theology about ghosts is a bit off. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for ANNABELLE COMES HOME.

More Detail:

ANNABELLE COMES HOME follows the story about the demonic doll who haunts families. ANNABELLE COMES HOME has a strong Christian, moral worldview of good versus evil where Jesus, prayer and the Holy Spirit are extolled, but it isn’t as scary as the previous movies in the CONJURING series and contains an aberrant theological perspective about ghosts.

Lorraine and Ed Warren are bringing back Annabelle, a doll that’s been possessed by demons in the past (ANNABELLE 2). As they drive home with Annabelle, their car starts to give them trouble, and they stop right next to a cemetery. Once, they are finally back on their way home, they get the doll home and bring in a priest right away to bless their home.

Every week the Warrens have their home blessed by a priest and pray over the space themselves, along with locking all the items in their basement that have been processed by a demon. Judy, their daughter, is going to be staying the weekend with her babysitter, Mary Ellen.

When her friend Daniela comes over, Mary Ellen tells her not to get into any trouble. Problem is, Daniela is very curious about the Warrens because she recently read a big news piece in the newspaper exposing that they did exorcisms. Daniela almost immediately goes to the locked basement with all the items that have been possessed. She searches through the office to find the keys to the basement, while Judy and Mary Ellen are out roller-skating. Walking into the basement, she takes out a photo of her father, puts it down and calls out for a sign, any sign from the spirits in the room. When she sees Annabelle, she unlocks the glass cell containing Annabelle and starts to take her out. Just then, an alarm goes off, so she runs out of the basement, leaving the cell open.

Annabelle is now out of her cell. Night falls and chaos ensues. Will the group be able to be safe despite the fact that Daniela called on demonic spirits?

ANNABELLE COMES HOME is a classic horror movie, with jump scares and classic characters. The movie is not as scary as the other Annabelle movies nor the other movies in the CONJURING series. The movie has too many unsuccessful scare tactics. One demon is a wolf and looks a bit cheesy. Another is a Japanese Warrior suit, which is also a bit cheesy. The scenes with these characters take away from the movie’s scariness. Overall, the movie will make viewers laugh more than scream. The comedy is sometimes intended, but so are the scares. They just weren’t that effective.

ANNABELLE COMES HOME has a strong Christian, biblical, moral worldview where good triumphs over evil. The movie also shows that Jesus wins over the devil. In fact, the power of prayer is very strong in this movie, which also shows that the Holy Spirit’s power works in the everyday. At one point, the Lord’s Prayer is repeated. Though this is the case, the movie talks about “good ghosts,” saying that some people roam around as spirits after they die. So, clearly, there are some theological problems with ANNABELLE COMES HOME. Therefore, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
