Los Angeles County Postpone‘s Movie Theaters Reopening
By Cooper Dowd, Contributing Writer
Los Angeles County Mayor Eric Garcetti made a statement urging businesses to remain closed and delay any reopening plans, movie theaters included.
“It is time for a collective course correction,” he said
Movie Theaters such as AMC, Regal, and Cinemark are not planning on reopening until mid-July. Blockbuster movies such as Christopher Nolan’s TENET and WONDER WOMEN 1984 are scheduled for July 31 and October 2 theatrical release dates respectively. TENET was holding firm for July 17, but was moved just a few weeks ago.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers drafted a 22-page “white-paper” outlining safety precautions and procedures for employees earlier this month. However, the proposed procedures could increase production costs by 20%.
Christian Meoli, the owner of independent theater Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood, is disappointed by the restrictions but looks forward to when the time comes to reopen.
“I’m going to respect what’s going on, and be ready for Day One, when we’re allowed to bring back our audiences and our audiences are allowed to come back to us,” he said. “I’ve seen they want to come back.”
