The new plan is to release the espionage thriller in Canada on Thursday, Aug. 27, before hitting select cities in the U.S. over Labor Day weekend on Sept. 3.
However, it’s unclear right now which cities in the U.S. will show the movie. It all depends on which cities give theaters the all clear in terms of the coronavirus.
AMC is set to reopen mid-to-late August, while other major theater chains haven’t announced updated plans on when they’ll open their doors.
The 10th anniversary of Nolan’s INCEPTION will still be celebrated as a precursor to his new feature.
INCEPTION will return to the big screens internationally on Aug. 12 and Aug. 21 in the U.S.
Movieguide® previously reported that TENET could hit the international box office first as COVID-19 cases have dropped.
Many theater chains and executives are buying into a staggered roll out.
Eric Wold of R. Riley FBR said, “As we believe that a perfect date may never arrive for studios to release films under the traditional day and date model, a gradual release plan would allow for the studio to begin monetizing the film theatrically in a way that would not be cannibalistic on potential box office revenues and help to build buzz for when the film opens into other markets.”
As of July 27, the new titles scheduled to be released exclusively in U.S. theaters are THE NEW MUTANTS followed by a limited release of THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD, both on Aug. 28.
TENET comes next on Sept. 3, with THE KING’S MAN and a limited release of KAJILLLIONAIRE on Sept. 18.
STX’s GREENLAND will drop on Sept. 25, with WONDER WOMAN 1984 following on Oct. 2.
