COUNTING ON’s Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo Share How God Guided Their Relationship

By Movieguide® Staff

Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo shared new details of their lives and how God guided their relationship in their new book, “The Hope We Hold.”

“I wasn’t in a hurry to get married. … I wanted a man who loved God more than he loved me. A man with spiritual and emotional maturity, who knew how to have a good time but also knew when to be serious. A man who was a leader,” Jinger wrote, noting that “guys were constantly asking” about her and her sisters because of the Duggar’s fame. “I understood it came with the territory when you’re a teenage girl on a reality show, but sometimes it was crazy, and a little creepy. At one point, at least 25 guys had asked about me or my sisters within a couple of months alone.”

Despite the chaos, Jinger eventually found love with Jeremy, who courted her for seven months before the couple got engaged in 2016 and married later that November. Part of the Duggars’ courtship rules include strong boundaries on physical affection, especially kissing, which they reserve for the wedding altar.

“Jeremy and I had talked about it quite a bit leading up to our wedding day. You sort of have to when your first kiss is going to be in front of a thousand people,” Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s sixth child recalls in the book. “‘Tilt your head to the right,’ he’d told me. ‘Just follow my lead.’ I should have felt nervous as we leaned into one another, but as our lips met for the first time, any jitters I might have had disappeared.”

Jeremy also opened up about some of the scrutiny he faced from the Duggar patriarch about his personal theology.

“I did not see that coming,” Jeremy wrote. “If anything was a stumbling block, I’d thought it would be my past. I drank and partied in college. I’d been arrested. I could understand parents looking at those issues as red flags. It had never occurred to me that my theology would be the issue.”

Jinger’s father also sent Jeremy a 50-page questionnaire to fill out before he gave him his blessing.

“I was actually pretty eager to fill it out and say, ‘OK, look, this is a good opportunity for them to get to know me,’” Vuolo told Us Weekly. “It’s tough for Mr. Duggar, man. He’s got all these girls [and] all these guys hanging around. I think if I had all those girls I’d probably come up with a document too.”

Still, the couple almost didn’t make it. Jinger initially turned Jeremy down when he started to pursue her.

“Anger and confusion overwhelmed me,” Jeremy recalled of the time. “I’d fallen victim to the ultimate bait and switch. If Jinger wasn’t interested, the previous five months had all been a wild-goose chase. Lord, what is going on? I prayed. I’ve wasted half a year of my life! I’m pastoring a church, I’m pursuing Christ, and now I’m getting jerked around. I don’t have time for this! I was ticked.”

Jinger eventually came around.

Now happily married, the couple shares 2-year-old daughter Felicity Nicole Vuolo and six-month-old Evangeline Jo Vuolo. Unfortunately, the year before, the couple suffered a miscarriage.

“I talked to [my sister] Joy a lot in that time,” the TLC star told Us Weekly in June 2020. “We grew closer. We were already close, but that relationship even deepened all the more having been through the same thing. [It] was very difficult, but I was grateful for Joy to be able to talk to her. [My sister-in-law] Lauren also just shared such sweet words with me.”

The couple wanted to share their story with the world to be a testament to the fulfilled promises of God.

“We can easily become obsessed with tomorrow, scrambling for security, for some semblance of control. We all want reassurance that everything’s going to be OK, don’t we? But the reality is, it might not be OK. Horrible tragedies happen every day. If we put our hope in our circumstances, we will be disappointed. No circumstance in this world can offer us true hope. But with Jesus we can look toward the future with confidence, free of fear! We aren’t afraid of tomorrow because we know who holds tomorrow,” Jinger says.
