Fans Speculate That Mark Harmon’s Former NCIS Co-Star Confirmed Gibbs’ Return

By Movieguide® Staff

Season 19 of NCIS progressed without the titular star Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) for the first time since 2003.

However, die-hard fans of the series are now convinced that Harmon will make a surprise return at the end of the current season.

After a tweet from one of NCIS’s original cast members, Michael Weatherly—who played Tony DiNozzo until Season 13—fans speculated that Harmon would not return alone.

On Dec. 5, Weatherly shared a throwback photo from his time on NCIS. The former right-hand man to Gibbs from 2003 to 2016 name-dropped his former Special Agent partner in the caption.

“This guy woke me up this morning,” Michael wrote. “Then I realized it was still a dream. He wouldn’t stop talking about Gibbs and his shoulder holster. #ncis dream.”

The next day, Weatherly posted an 11-second clip on Twitter of himself with an NCIS hat while decorating a Christmas tree.

“It’s time for some HARDBALL Xmas questions #ncis,” he wrote. “So, where were you on the morning of December 25th?” he says in the video. “Speak up. I can’t hear you. You think I’m kidding?!”

Fans took Weatherly’s callback to his character and relationship with Gibbs as a clear sign that the two could return to NCIS.

“Okkkkkk 2nd NCIS post in 2 days from you! Are u coming back?!” one user wrote.

Another added” “Sir are you and Cote going back to NCIS or in a Christmas special?? Unclear what clues I’m supposed to be uncovering here.”

According to GH, Harmon’s name still appears in the opening credits for season 19 of NCIS.

The outlet reported: “Whether or not Tony will make a guest appearance in NCIS in the near future is unknown, but it would be incredible if Gibbs was by his side. Not to mention, the two of them walking in with Ziva and a grown-up Tali. Can you imagine?! Here’s hoping!”

Meanwhile, actor Gary Cole took over as team leader.

Movieguide® previously reported:

After Mark Harmon announced his exit from NCIS as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Gary Cole’s Alden Parker will become the new team leader.

Harmon officially left the show in episode four of the newest season. Cole recently shared his thoughts on acting as the replacement for the iconic, fan-favorite agent.

While he does not believe anyone can replace Harmon or Gibbs, Cole said that he wants to portray a quality character for NCIS fans to enjoy.

“Parker isn’t overly chatty, but he is more verbal,” Cole told TVInsider. “He’s not as old school; he tries to get his hands on new tech gadgets and impress everybody. He’s trying to fit in with the rest of the team. Although he may be reluctant to voice it, he admires that Gibbs breaks rules. Parker bends them. We’ll see if it gets to the point of breaking.”
