By Movieguide® Staff

Actor William Hurt, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in 1985’s KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, died on March 13 at 71.

“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes,” William’s son, Will, confirmed in a statement.

Hurt also earned Oscar nominations for his performances in BROADCAST NEWS, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, and a brief appearance in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

In recent years, Hurt appeared as General Thaddeus Ross in THE INCREDIBLE HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, and 2021’s BLACK WIDOW.

BROADCAST NEWS co-star Albert Brooks was one of many who offered their tribute.

“So sad to hear this news,” Brooks wrote on Twitter. “Working with him on ‘Broadcast News’ was amazing. He will be greatly missed.”

Dr. Ted Baehr noted that, “Hurt was from a previous generation of Hollywood stars who was always polite open to discussing issues with grace. He was blessing.”
