Kirk Cameron: Public School Is Indoctrinating and Grooming Our Children

In a recent article Christian actor Kirk Cameron talked about the motivation for his new documentary THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING and why more parents are opting to homeschool their children.
“We’re realizing that our kids are actually not being so much educated as they are being indoctrinated and groomed,” Cameron said, instead of “teaching them to love God, to love their family, love their country and the values that made us the strongest, freest most prosperous nation in the world.”
The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns were an eye-opener for many parents as they discovered some of the curriculum were not aligned with their values— critical race theory, gender fluidity and anti-American ideas, just to name a few.
The heart of the homeschool movement is to “stop the damage” of indoctrination according to Cameron and also to pave a way for parents to take more of a proactive role in an education “more tailored for our children.”
As mentioned in a previous Movieguide® article Cameron stated:
“I explained that we, as parents, need to take back the leadership role in the education of our children so we can better prepare them for their future. Millions of parents and students agree,” Cameron continued. “As The Blaze noted in this article, homeschooling in the U.S. soared during the pandemic (up 63% in 18 states!!) and after public schools opened back up, many of the families never went back. Eyes are opening and hearts are stirring…the awakening is here.”
This movement is the inspiration for Cameron’s new documentary THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING, coming to theaters June 13th and 14th. The movie follows 17 families from different backgrounds and with various reasons for taking their kids out of public schools. Some parents feel that it is a safer environment, others see it as a better learning environment as reported in CBN News.
“They’re just looking for a better educational opportunity for their children. And when you think about it, the difference between one-on-one education or one-on-two or three or four or five, is a completely different situation than one teacher and 30 kids in a classroom,” Cameron said.
The father of six children, all of whom him and wife Chelsea Noble homeschooled, relates to some of the hesitations that others share in the movie:
“I always viewed homeschooling as somewhat of a cult,” one said. Others said they once thought of homeschoolers as “weird” or “abnormal.”
And like those parents, Cameron admits he also once had a “healthy fear” of homeschooling.
“I thought homeschooling was like, you had to be a Quaker or you had to be Amish. I was saying, I mean, does my wife need to wear a floor length, denim jumper, have a head covering and you know, where do we get the uniform?” he joked.
“And then I realized that I was just out of touch with this incredible robust community of people. There are experts and educational professionals creating curriculums that actually incorporate faith and what I’m learning is that parents are not stuck in a system that they’re not happy with.”
That incorporation of faith is the most crucial to Cameron, “We want our children understand who they are, who God is, their place in the world, why they’re here.”
