NCIS Star Sean Murray Remembers First Meeting Mark Harmon: ‘He Made Quite an Impression on Me’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Mark Harmon is now famous for his role on NCIS, but it was a very different role that made an impression on co-star Sean Murray.

The pair actually worked together years before they teamed up again for the crime show. Both appeared on HARTS OF THE WEST, a western drama.

Jeff Bridges was initially supposed to guest star in an episode of the show, but when he couldn’t make it work with his schedule, they called in another actor.

“They got Harmon to come and do the part instead… which I’ll never forget,” Murray shared. “That’s where I first met Harmon.

“He made quite an impression on me when he came on and did a role on HARTS OF THE WEST,” he continued. “I had a few scenes with him, and we talked quite a bit about craft and things. So, being able to work with him again all these years later is just great. And, you know, he’s been a bit of a mentor to me, whether he knows it or not.”

The pair even got to reminisce on their time on HARTS OF THE WEST.

“When we started [NCIS], it was like, ‘Hey man, good to see you again, because you made such an impression on me’ and vice versa back then so we felt we knew each other,” Murray explained.

Harmon officially exited the show after 19 seasons, but Murray has previously teased that he might return.

NCIS fans were sad to hear Mark Harmon would be leaving the crime show after 19 seasons, but showrunner Steven D. Binder has given fans hope for Harmon’s return.

While appearing at PaleyFest, Binder said, “Never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs [Harmon’s character] out. What the future will hold I can’t say, but I wouldn’t count anybody out, dead or alive, on the show.”

Sean Murray, who stars on NCIS as Special Agent Timothy McGee, has also mentioned the possibility of Harmon returning to the show.

“He does pop in,” Murray said, referring to Harmon’s role as an executive producer on the show. “I saw him two weeks ago actually. So, he’s around. It’s not like he’s packed up and left town or anything. I’m not saying this just to say it for a tease and all that, I really, truly believe that the Gibbs could pop up somewhere. I really believe that there’s a possibility of that happening.”

Murray also teased the possible return of another actor: Michael Weatherly. The actor just ended his show, BULL, and Murray let fans know he might be coming back to NCIS.

“I talk to Michael all the time, so we joke about that possibility sometimes,” Murray said.
