Hollywood’s Movies With Moral, Uplifting and Positive Content Dominate Global Box Office

By Movieguide® Staff

Net earnings from the international box office prove that the most successful movies adhere to a moral, uplifting worldview.

Most notably is the continued success of TOP GUN: MAVERICK and the JURASSIC franchise topping $6B as JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION approaches $1B worldwide.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION reads:

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION brings back the leading cast members of the first JURASSIC PARK movie. Scientist Ellie Sattler, paleontologist Alan Grant and mathematician Ian Malcolm team up to expose a large, shady biotech firm. The firm has re-created an extinct species of large locusts that’s eating all the world’s crops except for the corporation’s modified ones. Meanwhile, the same firm has sent some thugs to kidnap the baby of Owen Grady’s trained raptor dinosaur. They’ve also kidnapped Owen and his wife, and Claire’s adopted daughter, Maisie. The two situations turn out to be related. So, the five heroes all team up together.

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION has some terrific action set pieces. The movie also contains many dangerous, thrilling, scary dinosaur encounters. The constant roller coaster ride sometimes does get a little wearying, however. The movie’s main theme seems to be a celebration of motherhood. This strong moral theme is mixed, however, with strong environmentalist elements and implied references to evolution. JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION also contains some foul language and many scary, violent moments featuring lethal dinosaurs. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

In addition, Universal/Illumination’s MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU also performed well overseas, with almost $900M so far. In total, the five-movie DESPICABLE ME franchise totaled $3B worldwide.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU reads:

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU is an animated comedy in the DESPICABLE ME franchise. In the movie, Gru is a boy who longs to be a supervillain. Gru wants to join the Vicious 6, but they tease him because of his young age. So, he steals the Zodiac Stone from them. Furious, they chase after him, but Gru gives the stone to a minion, who loses it. Will Gru find the missing stone, or will the Vicious 6 destroy him?

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU is a funny, entertaining movie. However, it has a mixed worldview. For example, it contains New Age elements, such as battling over a Zodiac Stone with special powers. Set in the 1970s, the movie talks about a guru and the STAR WARS idea of using “the force.” This content is mixed with some moral, redemptive elements stressing sacrifice and helping others, even if it puts you in danger. At his core, Gru is just someone who wants a family. The villains in MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU are scary. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for children.

Whether in America or overseas, moral, uplifting content leads the way at the box office.
