AppleTV+ Reveals Details for Upcoming Godzilla Series

By Movieguide® Contributor

AppleTV+ gave fans a first look at the new Godzilla series, revealing the plot line and the name.

“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch,” AppleTV’s synopsis reads.

“Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives,” it concludes.

The show is set in the “Monsterverse,” a universe established by the most recent Godzilla cinematic saga – GODZILLA, GODZILLA VS. KONG and GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS. These movies have strong elements of friendship, family and sacrifice embedded in the many high-action battles.

The Monsterverse has found a strong audience, grossing nearly $2 billion at the global box office since it began in 2014.

The 10-episode series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Alisa Lasowski.

The show was co-developed by Chris Black and Matt Fraction and is executive produced by Black and Fraction alongside Jody Harold, Tory Tunnell, Matt Shakman, Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon and Andrew Colville.

Along with MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS, the Monsterverse will see a return to cinema next year with the highly anticipated GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE.

Movieguide® previously reported on MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS:

Apple’s streaming platform, Apple TV+, recently announced a new Godzilla show set just after the events of 2014’s GODZILLA.

Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the new series will focus on one family who discovers the hidden secrets about Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, and the Titans he faces…

Gizmodo reported

The biggest surprise here has to be setting this show in the previously established Warner Bros. Monsterverse. Maybe it was a mandate by Toho to keep building out the universe created by the 2014 Godzilla film, its 2019 sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2020’s monster hit Godzilla vs. Kong. But now this show, however it fits into this mythology, will live on one streamer while all the other films will be on another.
