How Biblical Beauty Differs from Hollywood’s Beauty Standards

Actress Charlize Theron’s fight against Hollywood’s beauty standards reveals why a biblical perspective on true beauty is key.

Theron expressed to Allure magazine, “Women want to age in a way that feels right to them. I think we need to be a little bit more empathetic to how we all go through our journey. My journey of having to see my face on a billboard is quite funny now.”

“My face is changing, and I love that my face is changing and aging,” the actress said of her own experiences as she ages.

Regarding body image and losing weight, Theron shed some light on how that became more of a struggle as she got older.

She recalled, “I remember a year into trying to lose the weight, I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying because I cannot lose this weight.’ And he was like, ‘You’re over 40. Calm down. Your metabolism is not what it was.’”

She added, “I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off.”

Despite what Hollywood says, the Bible suggests that beauty is not merely physical but also spiritual.

1 Samuel 16:7 reads, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

God values the condition of the heart and soul more than external appearances.

Moreover, the New Testament speaks about becoming conformed to the image of Christ, which involves cultivating qualities like love, compassion and self-sacrifice. This transformation is often considered a form of spiritual beauty.

Romans 8:29 states, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”

Beauty is also associated with inner qualities such as humility, kindness and righteousness.

Proverbs 31:30 states, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

This verse suggests that inner character and reverence for God are more enduring sources of true beauty.

Overall, the Bible’s perspective on beauty is complex, encompassing both physical and spiritual dimensions. While the world focuses on outward appearances, Scripture emphasizes the importance of inner character, virtue and relationship with God as central to true and lasting beauty.

Movieguide® previously reported on actresses who will not get plastic surgery:

A growing list of Hollywood women are voicing their concerns about plastic surgery.

Supermodel Christy Turlington is one of many stars who has spoken out against the procedures.

“Women who have stayed away from augmentation of themselves—those are the women I really admire. I love seeing a real face. A face of someone who’s lived life,” Turlington explained. “I will be one of those faces. I am one of those faces.”

She isn’t the only major star who has expressed opinions on plastic surgery.

Kate Winslet said plastic surgery “goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty. I’ll never give in. I am an actress. I don’t want to freeze the expression of my face.”

The TITANIC actress also joked to People, “I have the kind of wrinkles that are here to stay now… Not just the ones where you wake up in the morning and you go, ‘Oh, that will go away in two hours’ time.’ No, they’re there. That’s the way that it is.”
