How MLB Pitcher Ty Blach Stays Grounded in Faith: A ‘Bigger Purpose’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Colorado Rockies pitcher Ty Blach, nicknamed “The Preacher,” shares how his faith keeps him grounded amid success and failure.

In an interview with Call to the Pen, Blach discussed Psalm 27:14, the verse inscribed on his glove.

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord,” it reads.

“It just kind of keeps [me] grounded in my faith and reminds me that, no matter what’s going on in the game, there’s a lot bigger purpose for why I’m here and this chance that God’s given me to go out and compete and play for Him,” Blach stated in the interview.

“I think my faith is what keeps me grounded and allows me to keep going every single day,” Blach continued. “No matter if things are going good or bad. Just staying grounded in the Lord and just trusting that He’s got a greater plan for us and doing my best to live a life that’s worthy of everything that He’s given us.”

That mindset earned Blach the nickname “The Preacher” from broadcaster Johnny Doskow.

“I’ve always lived my faith out, just kind of pretty openly and I think [Doskow] just took to that and that’s where he came up with The Preacher…and it just kind of stuck,” Blach said.

Blach shared a photo of him praying before he took the mound on his Instagram.

“‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways be mindful of Him and He will make straight your paths’ -Proverbs 3:5-6,” he wrote.

Blach made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants on September 5, 2016. He started the game against the Colorado Rockies and impressed fans with his performance.

Over the next few years, Blach was used both as a starter and a reliever by the Giants. He had a knack for inducing ground balls and was known for his control and ability to keep hitters off balance. His best season statistically was in 2017, when he appeared in 24 games, starting 23 of them, and posted an ERA of 4.78.

However, Blach missed the entire 2020 season with the Baltimore Orioles due to a Tommy John surgery, which repairs the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow.

In 2021, Blach returned to the Orioles, where he spent his season in the minors. In 2022, Blach signed a major league deal with the Colorado Rockies organization.

Sports Spectrum reported, “Since getting back to the big leagues, Blach has a 2.42 ERA in 26.0 innings of work. He has given up two or fewer runs in four of his five starts and had his longest start since 2018 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 10, throwing six scoreless innings before giving up a home run to begin the seventh. Blach allowed two earned runs in five innings in his most recent outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks.”
