PAW PATROL Spin-Off Show Introduces Non-Binary Character

By Movieguide® Contributor

PAW PATROL is introducing a new non-binary character, River, in one of its spin-off shows, RUBBLE & CREW.

“I wanted to write a nonbinary character that was aspirationally cool, someone for the pups (and kids at home to look up to). They found an awesome non-binary to voice River, and I’m so so happy about how it turned out,” Lindz Amer, who wrote the episode River is featured in, said

One of the reasons PAW PATROL has remained so popular is its inclusion of family-friendly, biblical values. A portion of the Movieguide® review for PAW PATROL: THE MIGHTY MOVIE reads:

PAW PATROL: THE MIGHTY MOVIE is a fun, action-packed movie for all ages. It has a strong moral worldview stressing sharing, selfless acts, courage, and the importance of family. It does have some scenes of cartoon action and peril, along with a scene about an orphaned pup that could bother younger viewers. Ultimately, THE MIGHTY MOVIE succeeds in showing that real power comes from sharing, loving one another and family.

PAW PATROL isn’t the first children’s show that has started to introduce more LGBTQ+ characters. Movieguide® previously reported:

A recent episode of a Netflix show targeted at preschoolers celebrated a character coming out as “non-binary,” changing her name and using “they/them” pronouns, sparking backlash on social media.

In the newest season of RIDLEY JONES, an episode entitled “Happy Herd Day” features a female bison named “Fred.” Eager to show off her skills to Grandma Dottie, Fred remembers that Dottie doesn’t know about her new identity.

“My heart says that the way I feel most myself is to go by the name ‘Fred.’ That’s because I’m nonbinary and Fred is the name that fits me best. And I also use ‘they’ and ‘them,’ because calling me a she or a he doesn’t feel right to me,” Fred says to Dottie.

Dottie apologizes and thanks Fred for sharing.

The Christian Post also reported that WE BABY BEARS “featured two characters with ‘they/them’ pronouns.”

A report from GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) called for “20 percent of all television characters to be LGBT by the year 2025,” per another article from The Christian Post.

As more anti-biblical themes appear in children’s entertainment, teaching your children media literacy and a biblical worldview is increasingly more important.

Movieguide® previously reported on the importance of media literacy:

With the flood of mass media of entertainment, parents need help educating the hearts and minds of their children to be media-wise.

According to Cornell University, 9 out of 10 children abandon the values of their parents. According to USA Today, 83% of the youth leave the church, and 80% of the parents are very worried about their children and the mass media of entertainment’s influence on them.

Recently, USA Today noted that 70% of Americans were unable to name the Ten Commandments. In a culture where physical health is a higher priority than spiritual vitality, another recent survey found that more Americans are familiar with the specific ingredients in a McDonald’s hamburger than know the individual commands that comprise the Ten Commandments.
