Why Dolly Parton Only Communicates Via Fax: ‘Surrounded By Enough People’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Dolly Parton might be one of the most famous people in the world, but the country superstar recently revealed she’s only reachable by fax.

“I don’t want to get into that world,” Parton said during a recent appearance on THE VIEW, referring to the world of cell phones, emails and social media. “I’m surrounded by enough people.”

Parton shared that longtime friend and musical collaborator Kenny Rogers “used to aggravate” her about her low-tech habits.

“I said, ‘Look, I’ll send you a message by carrier pigeon if I need to get in touch with you. You always seem to know how to reach me when you want something!’” the singer laughed.

She continued, “So I actually, I never did get into getting involved in all that because it’ll take up too much of my time if I tried to get in touch with everybody who is trying to get in touch with me,” she continued. “So I just say, ‘Fax me! Fax me or call me and I’ll call you back.’”

Parton’s love of faxing is well-documented. Her goddaughter and fellow musician Miley Cyrus joked about the “Jolene” singer’s resistance to texting and emailing.

“Every time I coordinate and kind of communicate with Dolly, it’s still through fax,” she said while on LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS. “We do use the phone, but she does a fax and then someone scans the fax and then they put it into a text message. And then that gets sent to me, and it’s always signed.”

Cyrus added, “She has a phone — she just doesn’t use it, I don’t think. I think someone uses it for her and does the fax machine through the phone.”

Reba McEntire is another star who’s been thrown for a loop by Parton’s communication methods.

Speaking about their duet, “Does He Love You,” McEntire explained, “Well, you don’t call Dolly, you fax her. And you fax your people and your people talk to her people. That’s the only way I know to get a hold of her. I even asked Kenny Rogers one time, I said, ‘Do you have Dolly’s cell number?’ He said, ‘No.’ So you fax her.”

Despite the difficulty in contacting Parton, she still manages to connect with plenty of high-profile collaborators. Movieguide® previously reported:

Parton’s upcoming album, “Rockstar,” comes out November 17. “The 30-song collection… includes nine original tracks and 21 iconic rock anthems,” BlabberMouth.net reported.

It features collaborations with Sting, Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, P!nk, Brandi Carlile, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris and other A-list performers.
