THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, based on C. S. Lewis’s popular Christian fable, tells the story of four English children, who enter the land of Narnia, where they meet Aslan, the son of the Emperor-Beyond-the-Sea, who rescues the land from the evil White Witch. Despite some minor changes from the book, THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE retains most of its Christian focus and is tremendously exciting, thrilling and redemptive.

THE CROODS: A NEW AGE

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
In the animated comedy THE CROODS: A NEW AGE, the prehistoric Crood family meets a family named the Bettermans, who challenge the Croods on everything. THE CROODS: A NEW AGE is a very funny, heartwarming movie that the whole family can enjoy, with moral messages about family, commitment and love throughout the story.

CINDERELLA

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
CINDERELLA is Disney’s live-action version of the classic fairy tale where a girl has two loving parents who instill in her the message that if you are kind and good then you will be happy, but when her parents pass away, she’s put in a position where kindness and goodness are not always easy. CINDERELLA has a very strong Christian, moral worldview of loving and serving others before yourself, but it does have some magical thinking set in a fairytale world.

HORTON HEARS A WHO

Quality:
***
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
HORTON HEARS A WHO is an uneven adaptation of the famous story by Dr. Seuss about the elephant who hears a tiny voice crying in the wilderness and declares, “A person’s a person, no matter how small!” HORTON HEARS A WHO is sometimes entertaining and humorous movie and sometimes dull and annoying when it dilutes its message of faithfulness, compassion, self-sacrifice, and looking out for others with some Romantic, politically correct messages.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN

Quality:
***
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN finds the hero of the first movie and his museum friends trying to stop an evil Egyptian king’s plot to rule the world. It is a charming, creative family adventure sprinkled with humor, romance, excitement, and history, including two brief positive references to God and an implied reference to Jesus Christ and His positive impact on history.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
The very funny CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN stars Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt as parents of 12 children who must confront their priorities when their careers get in the way. CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN is highly entertaining. Although it is not the beloved original novel, it makes a tremendous number of positive, redemptive, and moral points including affirming the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the midst of messy situations.

DESPICABLE ME 2

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
DESPICABLE ME 2 finds the former villain Gru joining the Anti-Villains League to stop a villain who’s turning Gru’s adorable little minions into monsters with a stolen secret formula. DESPICABLE ME 2 is one of the funniest, laugh-out-loud, hilarious, best conceived, well-plotted, most enjoyable movies ever. Every form of villainy is refuted, family is affirmed, doing the right thing is affirmed, and good triumphs.

THE PRINCESS DIARIES

Quality:
****
Content:
+3 Some minor questionable elements. (Media-wisdom is suggested to discuss.)
THE PRINCESS DIARIES is a G-rated modern fairy tale about a teenage girl in San Francisco who finds out that she is heir to the throne of a small European nation. THE PRINCESS DIARIES is a wonderful, wholesome filmmaking gem, a movie that children and young teenagers should want to see over and over.

THE LEGO MOVIE

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
THE LEGO MOVIE is an animated comedy about an underdog hero carrying the key to peace, who must battle a wannabe dictator in order to save the world. THE LEGO MOVIE is a hilarious movie with great animation and a strong moral worldview containing a strong Christian allegory.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

Quality:
****
Content:
+2 Moderately questionable elements.
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS re-introduces Alvin, Simon, Theodore, and their protective manager, David Seville, who tries to protect them from a big record mogul. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS is very funny with a lot of heart and good family values celebrating Christmas.
