Two-Parent Households on the Rise in America

By Movieguide® Contributor

Two-parent households are making a comeback in America after they had been on the decline for years.

CBN reported, “…research psychologist Nicholas Zill noted data from ‘the U.S. Census Bureau [which] shows that in 2023, the proportion of children in two-parent families increased to 71%. The fraction in single-parent families decreased to 25%, while the proportion with neither birth parent declined slightly to under 4%.’”

The Institute for Family Studies, which initially reported the findings, shares that in 1960, 88% of children lived in a two-parent household. In 2005, that number hit an all-time low of about 67%. Since then, the numbers have slowly increased.

Zill commented on how people increasingly seem to value marriage.

“There seem to be growing numbers of young adults in all racial and ethnic groups who realize the economic, educational, and emotional benefits of marriage for themselves and their future children,” he stated. “As parenthood becomes more selective, the marriage-minded may have an advantage in childbearing.”

Numerous studies reveal the many benefits of raising children in a two-parent household. TIME reported:

The evidence is clear, even if the punchline is uncomfortable: children are more likely to thrive— behaviorally and academically, and ultimately in the labor market and adult life—if they grow up with the advantages of a two-parent home. Numerous academic studies confirm that children raised in married parent homes are less likely to get in trouble in school or with the law; they are more likely to graduate high school and college; they are more likely to have higher income and be married themselves as adults.

Most American children, 70%, live in two-parent homes, with 63% living with both of their biological parents, according to the Survey of Income and Program Participation by the U.S. Census Agency.

In other words, the traditional nuclear family accounts for at least 70% of the American consumer market in the entertainment industry, and probably even more than that, since it is children, including teenagers, who are more likely than parents and adults to see movies and television programs.
