YouTuber Says His Life Is ‘Over’ After Becoming a Dad, But …
By Movieguide® Contributor
“Dude Dad” YouTuber Taylor Calmus says your life is over once you become a parent — and that’s not a bad thing at all.
“Hi! I’m a dad, and my life is over,” he said in a recent video. “Okay, soon-to-be-parents, here’s the deal. Once you give your children life, yours is over. It doesn’t happen all at once…one day, you’ll realize that you haven’t seen your friends in months because you’ve been at home changing diapers.”
Calmus listed, “I don’t get to bomb black diamonds at the ski resort. I get to do bunny slopes with my kids….I don’t get to fish. I get to untangle fishing lines….I no longer get to go on vacations. I’m now an unpaid employee on my kids’ vacations.”
He then recalled a ski trip his family took where his older kids were able to ski by themselves, except for his youngest daughter. Calmus spent the day with her, watching her become more confident as a skier.
Calmus shared, “Watching her succeed was more fun than any run I could’ve done by myself.”
“Becoming a father is realizing that being on the sideline of life is not a bad place to be, that their successes will outweigh your successes every time, and seeing them succeed and seeing them live life is better than living it yourself,” he concluded.
In an essay for Business Insider, Calmus explained that he sometimes has to remind himself to stay in the moment with his kids, instead of always thinking ahead.
“As a dad, I’m always thinking up the next grand idea. I’ll admit, sometimes I get too caught up in a project, making it bigger and better,” Calmus wrote. “I think it’s common among parents: We spend so much time doing things that we forget what our kids really want and need is just our attention. We have to remember that it’s not about always going above and beyond. It’s about just showing up. When we’re so exhausted from keeping them alive, just being there with them is enough.”

It’s a topic he explores in his children’s book, “Dad and the Recycling-Bin Rollercoaster.”
“As fathers, reading to our kids is one of the easiest ways to connect with our children,” Calmus said in a statement. “It’s a dream-come-true for our family to have our own children’s book.”
Calmus appeared on Magnolia Network’s SUPER DAD.
“I think that our duty as fathers is to create the adventures for our kids,” the SUPER DAD star says. “Kids go through this crazy process of developing mentally and emotionally and physically, and they really learn the most from just play. That’s literally their job as kids, it’s just to play, and us as dads. we have very playful souls, so I really feel like it’s kind of our place and our duty to create the adventure for our kids.”
