Influencer Madison Prewett Troutt reflected on the seriousness of sin in a new Instagram video, reminding her followers that “God’s grace isn’t an excuse to sin.”

“Jesus sets us free from sin, not to sin,” Troutt began the video. “Everyone wants to talk about how God gives grace, how He forgives, how He loves, but no one wants to talk about the seriousness of sin — that it leads to bondage, that it leads to death out of people who call themselves Christians, yet continue to have a relationship with sin, the very thing that separates them from Jesus, and they don’t obey the Word of God, and yet they wonder why they are in so much bondage.”

The former BACHELOR recalled a conversation she had with a college girl.

“Everyone preaches to us that God loves us and that God gives grace, but no one is talking about the seriousness and deadliness of sin, and I’m watching it kill my friends,” the girl told Troutt.

The girl’s realization echoes biblical truth found in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death.”

“We like to often use God’s grace as an excuse to sin or use it as a security blanket to fall back onto so we can keep living how we want to live, and then we throw out there that Jesus still loves me, and Jesus will forgive me,” Troutt continued.

But really, if you have truly “encountered the grace of God, you will run from sin, not toward it.”

She continued, “Sin does not set you free. Sin fakes freedom while stealing your soul. It looks like pleasure, but it will always lead to pain. It may feel like power for a moment or like pleasure for a second, but it will always end in slavery. Sin is not to be overlooked, downplayed, tolerated or flirted with. Sin will cost you everything, not just the big sins, but the small sins.”

Miraculously, Romans 6:23 doesn’t leave us without hope. The verse concludes, “…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Only when we turn repent from our sins and look to Christ as our savior can we break free from sin’s grip and find “hope, happiness and purpose.”

Troutt explores this topic more in her new book Dare to Be True: Defeat the Lies That Bind You and Live Out the Truth That Frees You.

In it, she “talks about how you can break free from the sin that is breaking you.”

“This isn’t just a book about recognizing what’s wrongIt’s an invitation to step into the abundant life you were made for. With interactive challenges at the end of each chapter — Truths for You and Dares to Do — you’ll be pushed, encouraged, and equipped to live with boldness, purpose, and freedom,” the synopsis continues.

Troutt’s video is a timely reminder that God’s grace doesn’t give us an excuse to sin. Instead, because of our relationship with Christ, we should want to flee from it.
