Filmmaker Andrew Erwin revealed I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 just finished filming.

“We wrapped filming on I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead,” Erwin said in a press release. “It’s early days, and there’s still a lot of work ahead, but I can tell you this: our team is pouring everything we’ve got into this one. We know how much the first film meant to so many of you, and we don’t take that lightly. We’re doing our best to craft something beautiful, honest, and full of the same heart.”

The movie follows MercyMe’s Bart Millard after the success of his hit song “I Can Only Imagine.” He’s “living the dream — sold-out arenas, a devoted fanbase, and a thriving career.”

“But Bart’s world begins to shift under the weight of devastating challenges, including a life-changing medical diagnosis for his young son, Sam,” a synopsis of the film continues. “As Bart struggles to hold his family together, his wife Shannon becomes the steady anchor — caring for Sam, supporting Bart, and holding on to hope when it feels far away. When Sam and newcomer Tim Timmons join the band for their biggest tour yet, Bart must navigate the demands of fatherhood and the pressures of fame, all while helping his son find the courage to sing his own song.”

“We’ve got an incredible cast, a powerful story to tell, and a lot of coffee fueling us behind the scenes,” Erwin continued. “Stay connected with us via email or social media, so you’ll be the first to see the trailer when it’s ready. We can’t wait to share more with you. Thanks for being here, and thanks for caring about these stories.”

The cast includes returning stars John Finley, Trace Adkins and Dennis Quaid, along with newcomers Milo Ventimiglia, Arielle Kebbel, Joshua Bassett, Sophie Skelton and Sammy Dell.

A video shared by Kingdom Story Company, the movie’s production company, Millard and Finely discussed what fans can expect in the next movie.

“So, this movie, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2, is a story around one of our other popular songs, a song called ‘Even If’ to where now I’m the father and my son, it’s we switched roles,” Millard said. “I don’t have Dennis Quaid this time around. I’m the dad learning how to have a relationship with my son and do it right. It’s a beautiful story. I love the script. It turned out so great.”

“It’s another powerful story. For those that are questioning, for those that are wondering, for those that are looking to see if God is still there for them, this movie is for you. You have to come see it,” Finley added.

The first I CAN ONLY IMAGINE won a Movieguide® Teddy Bear Award® in 2019. Movieguide®’s review praised its “Very strong Christian, Biblical worldview showing the power of Jesus Christ’s Gospel to redeem and reconcile.”

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 is set to release in theaters nationwide on Feb. 20, 2026.
