Netflix announced that it has signed a deal with Catan maker Asmodee to develop movies and TV shows based on the wildly popular settlement-centric board game.

“Anyone who has played Catan knows [that] the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, head of scripted series, US and Canada Netflix. “We knew landing this deal would be as game-changing as a well-placed settlement, so we decided to pool our resources across series, features, animation, and games and show Asmodee the full power of Netflix when we work together. Harcore ‘Settlers’ are going to lose their minds, and new fans will finally learn just how important a sheep trade can be.”

The slew of content coming down the Netflix pipeline will focus on the settlers as they traverse a vast frontier, navigate the shifting landscape of alliances, compete for resources, and defend themselves against robbers.

“Millions of people are enjoying ‘Cata’ since it was created and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming,” said Thomas Koegler, the CEO of Asmodee. “I’m thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe, I find it exciting for the future of the brand. It’s also a testament that board gaming is truly part of pop culture and a popular form of entertainment in everyone’s homes, and I’m delighted to continue Asmodee’s relationship with Netflix.”

The deal to develop Catan-based content comes as Netflix has looked to the world of games to draw on popular IP for upcoming shows and movies. Other games it is developing for the platform include Arcane, Castlevania, Family Pack, Exploding Kittens, Assassin’s Creed, and Gears of War.

Meanwhile, Asmodee has used its relationship with Netflix to go the other way and develop board games based on original Netflix IP. These games include Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Bridgerton.

“When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together – both at the table and beyond it,” Benjamin and Guido Teuder said in a joint statement. “This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey.”

As the entertainment world continues to mine established IP for new shows and movies, it is exciting to see some of the world’s most popular games being transformed into a new medium for fans to enjoy.
