WAR ROOM actress, author and speaker Priscilla Shirer recently offered some insight into spiritual gifts.
“Just because something is a talent doesn’t mean it’s a spiritual gift ‘cause the difference between the two is the source of the two,” Shirer explained. “You can have a natural knack for the piano, a natural knack for athleticism, for writing, for whatever. It’s just your natural bend, and you can practice it and hone it and become an expert in it.”
“That doesn’t make it a spiritual gift just ‘cause you’re good at it. The spiritual gift is something the Holy Spirit is the source of, which you also need to exercise and practice these spiritual gifts,” she said.
Spiritual gifts aren’t for entertainment or to be thought of as a developed skill.

“The purpose of this is not just to be good at it. The purpose of this, the whole source of it, the reason why the Holy Spirit has me gifted in this area is to edify somebody else. To build up, to encourage, to instill faith and to draw people to Jesus,” Shirer said.
She explained that just as someone who wants to develop a skill might surround themselves with people and content related to that, those who want to discover their spiritual gifts should do the same.
“Those who are excellent at it, those who are honoring the Holy Spirit as the source of it,” Shirer said. “I was around people who actually love Jesus and had integrity. I could see a million miles away as a very young woman when someone was just talented.”
“God, in His grace and mercy, put me around people who realized their talent wasn’t enough,” she continued. “That if the Holy Spirit wasn’t transforming that natural talent they may have into a gift so that it was dripping with the supernatural part that you can’t manufacture.”
She explained that she can be a good communicator, but it’s the Holy Spirit that touches someone’s soul. And she can only help it to do that if she’s walking with God.
Shirer dives into all kinds of spiritual topics in her sermons, Bible studies and books. Her most recent book, I Surrender All, came out last year.
Part of the description reads, surrender is “the one choice standing between you and the life of freedom and fulfillment, of peace and purpose you’ve always wanted. I Surrender All is all about making that choice.”
Shirer’s message makes sense. Spiritual impact needs the Holy Spirit to be effective. That comes from a life surrendered to God as the Holy Spirit transforms ability into something that points others to Jesus.
