Disney will shine a light on some previously unexplored characters! The studio just announced upcoming the live-action movie STEPSISTERS, telling the story of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters.
”Akiva Schaffer is set to helm STEPSISTERS, offering a comedic take on the property’s villainous characters who torment Cinderella,” The Hollywood Reporter announced.
Schaffer, an SNL alum and member of comedy group The Lonely Island, has previously directed HOT ROD, CHIP ‘N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS and THE NAKED GUN.

STEPSISTERS will reteam Schaffer with writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who previously worked with the director on CHIP ‘N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS and THE NAKED GUN. Gregor and Mand are set to write the screenplay, which is based on an original script from Michael Montemayor, who wrote TANGLED.
Production is still in its early stages, so no casting announcements have been made.
STEPSISTERS is the latest in a series of live-action adaptations Disney is working on. The studio recently announced the casting of a live-action version of TANGLED, with Teagan Croft and Disney Channel’s ZOMBIES star Milo Manheim playing Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively.
“I can’t believe that it’s happening. I love this movie,” Manheim said during an appearance on LIVE WITH KELLY AND MARK, adding that he’s already prepping for the action components of the role, from “learning how to hold my breath for five minutes” to “how to ride a horse.”
Disney is also preparing for the release of a live-action MOANA, starring Catherine Laga’aia as the titular character and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui.
“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” 19-year-old Laga’aia said in a statement about the project. “I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”
Johnson has also spoken about the role, telling Entertainment Weekly it provides important representation for Polynesian culture.
“You realize that you’re representing cultures and people who came before you who were voyagers, they were warriors, they were slaves, in many cases they had the language taken away, in many cases had their land stolen but got it back, persevered,” he explained.
Johnson continued, “There’s still this pride and joy and this idea of community and culture and sharing, as opposed to gatekeeping. We all share in this. We all share it together. So you feel that responsibility, and it does hit differently.”
From popular musical tales to stories of villains who are finally getting the spotlight, Disney has plenty of live-action versions of their classic movies on the way!
