For Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Alex Call, understanding what it means to make disciples took some time, but now, he’s all in.

“As I went through high school, as I went through the early years of my life, it was always kind of like, being a Christian is like, ‘Well, I don’t do these things.’ And it wasn’t until, like, I got to college and I got into even professional baseball, where it was, ‘No, actually, it’s so much more than that,'” the World Champion shared on “The Walk” podcast. “Like God calls us all to be disciples. Jesus says, ‘Go and make disciples of all nations.'”

“And when I always read that as a kid, I was like, ‘Yeah, that sounds nice, but, like, that sounds like what missionaries do in Africa.’ And, you know, I don’t know if we’re all called to that, but that’s not what Jesus says. Jesus says we’re all called to make disciples,” he continued.

“So it was at that point where I flipped,” Call reflected. “If Jesus is calling me and all of us to do that, well, then I want to play my part. I want to do my thing for Christ. I want to live it out in a way that, you know, other people see my faith, and they say they see Jesus.”

As the 2026 MLB season started last month, Call vowed to keep his “eyes on the King.”

“Counting every blessing,” the athlete wrote on Instagram before he referenced ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭3‬.

The verses read:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Though originally drafted in 2016, Call didn’t make his MLB debut until 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians. Since the beginning, his focus has been on Jesus.

“Obviously this is something I want — to be in the major leagues — but also I want to be where He needs me,” he told Sports Spectrum in 2023. “And I want to be available and present to whatever He has for me.”

For Call, the baseball field is more than just an opportunity to hit home runs and win games; it’s an opportunity to point his fans to Jesus and make disciples.
